This is the second book in Hambly’s Darwath trilogy, and unlike other second books of Hambly’s that I’ve read, it’s very much the second book in a series. Which is to say, revelations and setup for the last book.
Unsurprisingly, I was more interested in Gil and Alde becoming friends, and Alde starting to learn to stand up for herself and up to her brother and starting to learn how to be queen. And I really loved when Rudy thought to himself that there was no way Gil and Alde could have anything in common to base a friendship on, and then they almost immediately started to become friends.
I did, of course, also like Ingold and Rudy’s journey to look for the mages. And…uhm…what they discovered about the city reminded me of the druids in Terry Brook’s Shannara books (before I realized they weren’t that good, and nostalgia could only carry a girl so far).
But mostly, I’m just ready to see how it all turns out. Though I kind of wish that I didn’t know there was a book about Icefalcon, implying that he might not be dead after all.
