Which is actually the sixth (and last, I believe) season in the UK.

I liked the focus on the soldiers returning home from war and having difficulty readjusting to civilian life. The guy who threw up his wife’s food because it was rich, healthy food instead of the bad, plain food he’d had in prison, and his stomach couldn’t handle it was a good (and surprising) touch. I’m also glad that the show didn’t shy away from his being racist against the young German who was working on his farm. It’s similar to a teacher I had in high school whose ex-husband was a Vietnam vet, and when he heard Vietnamese spoken, he had a complete shutdown and had to be quickly removed from the trigger before he instinctively turned violent. It’s a racism that isn’t born out of prejudice, but out of horrific experiences, and one that can be recovered from.

I was (pleasantly) surprised that those subplots worked out, though. I kept expecting one to end badly, especially once we learned that the woman in the last episode had had an affair once her husband had been gone several years.

Unsurprisingly, Andrew shows up at the end to grovel a bit and ask Sam to take him back. Dumping her with a Dear Jane letter still seems very out of character to me. (I’m sure it was actually a case of the actor not being available, and that being the first excuse they thought of. I think I’ve half-convinced myself that what really happened is that he had another near-breakdown and convinced himself that he was no good for her and lied in the letter. Not that that isn’t extremely “grr”-worthy too, but it fits him more.

(And am I the only one who is extremely amused at how Foyle’s grandchildren are going to talk nonstop?)

I also liked how it tied into things from the earlier seasons (including the Secret Service lady!) and had sendups to various themes and events. And Sam’s eagerness for dead bodies so she could keep being a police driver was a hoot.
