My opinion here is unpopular with both critics and fans of the show: Interesting concept, but poorly thought out, often totally illogical, overdramatic, and a large chunk of the dialogue made me wonder if it was supposed to be a parody.

And yet, like with when the series started, I kept thinking throughout that if this were a manga, it’d be totally awesome. But then, a manga would rather revel in the absurdity, and if it took itself half as seriously as this episode did, it would enter into the realm of the utterly cracktastic.

However? I would still totally watch the show that’s set up at the end of this episode, overly caught up in the Serious Drama as it was.

Spoilery thoughts:

1. A PHONE CALL? Really? That’s what brought on the zombie apocalypse?
2. Caroline gets headaches and relies on Paul to get around to saving the day. MIRACLECATCH RAGE RETURNING! RISING! RISING! (Though I shallowly concede that they looked quite nice after bursting through the wall.)
3. FINALLY someone has a moment to show absolute hatred and disgust at the Dollhouse’s antics.
4. Claire/Boyd: Less squicky than the Claire/Topher everyone was convinced would happen. Actually, really only squicky due to my hatred of Boyd. And…I’m sure that her still waiting for him once she was Whiskey and wiped again was supposed to be angsty and dramatic, but I had to laugh. And, uhm, get distracted by how River-ish it all was.
5. This is me still shipping Victor/Sierra in shame. Much shame. But shipping. But what does Joss have against couples working out?
6. The Ambrose thing made NO SENSE whatsoever. Like, Caroline leaving a copy of herself to guide others did, but “Ambrose” was supposedly getting upgraded, and yet, there were 10 others, so actually, the real Ambrose gets none of the satisfaction, and programmed copies of him get to look good and eat shellfish. I mean, Margaret made sense too, because I can follow the cathartic logic of a copy of yourself solving your murder, but sending out copies of you to have “improved” lives while you don’t? Doesn’t make sense.
7. Was I supposed to be feeling sorry for Topher? I was laughing at his pain, I admit. And wondering why he wasn’t dead.
8. I liked Dominic and still read him as totally in love with Adelle. I must be depraved.
9. Still avoiding the subject of rape. But then, I don’t think the show sees it as saying anything about rape, but as commenting on prostitution. Which is its biggest failure, really. Well, one of them.
10. I freely concede that there were a few times I zoned out (Bad. Dialogue. Which is sad, as Whedon is kinda known for dialogue.) and just observed the pretty of Olivia Williams and Amy Acker. (Sadly, Dichen Lachman’s one scene was too dark.)
