As much as I love this series overall, I really do think it should have been a few volumes shorter. This volume was mostly “what they’ll do next,” and most of it seemed rather unnecessary. Or at least, like it could have all been told in a lot less space.

There was one thing, though, that really bugged me.

Specifically, when Kyo said that learning Akito was female meant that he’d been violent with a woman for all those years.

Because, really? As much as I loathe all the excuses fiction comes up with for men to be violent to women, Akito was Kyo’s abuser, and personally, I’d focus on the part where he wanted to defend himself and the people he cared about from an abuser.

Which, really, is a large part of why I’m not as into the later part of the series as I am into earlier volumes. Because, while Akito’s story needed to be told and she’s even made interesting and sympathetic, I can’t really get into a narrative centered around an abuser, even an abuser who was a victim of abuse. One instance of losing control and then dealing with it? Sure. But years of abusing people, especially children? There’s a mental wall there in my head that can’t be scaled.
