So, apparently, there’s a big hullabaloo about some of the ads from this year’s Superbowl being sexist. As I tend to forget it exists unless people are actually talking to me about it, I missed this until someone said they assumed everyone had heard about it by now. This seems to sum things up well and liberally links to things.
So, I went to youtube, watched one (some car ad about how helpless men suffer endless horrors and indignities like listening to your opinions and being nice to your mother for the pleasure of getting to drive an awesome car) and decided that my time would be far more happily spent watching the last episode of Princess Returning Pearl. But then I saw a video and clicked on it, thinking it was going to be some sort of intelligent commentary on the subject. Sadly, it was anything but.
(Warning: This starts inarticulate and quite privileged, but probably an extremely misguided attempt that he thought was well-intentioned, but by the end, he’s essentially ranting about how women who complain about things men don’t have a problem with are “f*****g idiots” and calling everything female he can think of a “b****”.)
Anyway, my favorite part is when he complains about people who get upset about things that aren’t deliberately offensive. Because, seriously, 99% of the things that are sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise bigoted, prejudiced, or offensive? Are not intended to be so, because they’re assumed “natural” or “funny” or “the way things are,” or involve some other handwaving meant to silence/portray as irrational anyone who disagrees with them.
Anyway, I’m going with
lyssie’s suggestion and imagining Archie Goodwin dragging such people out the door by the heals. Sadly, I could not find a clip of this on youtube, but I did find a similar scene.
(If confronted with a woman raging against sexism, Archie would listen attentively and tell her that she was beautiful and intelligent and the guy was scum. Fritz would make sure the door to Wolfe’s office was closed, because he’d be no help, and then fix her a drink.)
