I suspect I’m in the minority of preferring the manga of this to the anime, though I did like the anime too.
The colors are beautiful and I love the soundtrack, but it’s a bit too paced for me. Which is odd, because I actually does think it’s any more deliberately paced than Kino no Tabi or Haibane Renmei or Gunslinger Girls, and the pacing there doesn’t bother me.
Also, while I can’t quite recall the order of the stories in the manga, the anime seems to have rearranged them so that the first half is almost a solid block of men telling sad stories, usually about dead or lost women*, and then the second half has everything else. I do remember my favorite of the stories, about the two women in the library of mushi, taking place earlier in the manga.
*I’m not particularly bugged as it is a part of the genre and it isn’t gratuitous, much less all of the stories, but the arrangement drives it home a bit much.
