I almost forgot that there was a plot to this beyond shounen tournament fights!

Err…was there a single woman in the tournament besides Genkai? Who, like, had to de-age herself 50 years to get to fight. Then got to get fridged so Yusuke could angst, then unfridged to show us Toguro isn’t a total monster and has feeeeeelings. HE COMES BACK DOESN’T HE. Don’t answer. And every other woman in the cast is relegated to cheerleader.

Manga, it is a good thing you are filled with such amazing crack and random bursts of cuteness.

Sadly, this new round of post-tournament characters is rather…dull? Maybe it’s the onslaught of so many boyheroes at once. (Not a single girl gets demon energy from the hole, Togashi? Really? You’d better whip out some hardcore OMGWHAT imagery and crack soon.) Like, I rolled my at a lot of the tournament guys, but at least most of them were entertaining, or watching the guys beat them was fun?

Togashi also seems to be experimenting with art style here, especially with the villains in the tournament parts. Did he branch off into seinen after YYH?

I'm suddenly realizing that must have been why I found it so damn hard to slog through...

Not enough Keiko. Ever.

Level E was his (very odd and short lived) series after YYH, and it ran in Shonen Jump, too. Hunter x Hunter came next and is also in SJ.

We do get another kickass female in the last major arc, though she's fleshed out better in the anime.
