The ever so wise Erik Larsen(popularly known as "Erik Larceny" to some New Warriors fans) has posted an ever so educational article about Nova, including the original New Warriors series, at CBR.

I'm ever so glad I read this article. Why, I never realized that no New Warriors fan who had read the original Nova series liked Nova's portrayal in that book. I guess I dreamed all the Nova fans on the New Warriors list. It seems that only those who were Nova's fans way back when can actually claim to like the "real" Nova. Apparently those of us who merely have the entire run of New Warriors, plus associated junk we have out of character and name loyalty, aren't really fans. I apologize for my audacity.

Except, it seems I don't really have the entire run. Apparently, I stopped reading the book after Fabes left. Hunh. Guess I dreamed up those 20 odd issues. Well, at least it was a good dream.

I'm also rather grateful that Mr. Larsen explained to me what "fun" is. Apparently, I've been laboring under a misapprehension about that for years. It seems "fun" is a guy becoming a complete cretin, treating his friends like dirt and throwing his girl friend away when she's frightened and needs him. It also seems that that's what nice guys do. Maybe that why I seem to like bad boys?

Hey, if Mr. Larsen's Nova really was that much fun, I wonder if there's some group or club I could check out about it. Hunh. A few websites, but none really go into his take on the character(well, not kindly, at least)...most results seem to be New Warriors, or focus on him before and during that 75 issue run.(Hey, how long did the esteemed Mr. Larsen say his Nova run was again?) Hmm...there's more about that second New Warriors series he was talking about than his Nova series.

::checks the radar for a cult following blip::

Hmm...maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place?

I KNOW!!!

Maybe if I ask Mr. Larsen in person, he can point out some fans to me. I'll need to take up a collection so I can purchase a plane ticket, though.

Hey James, can I borrow one of your swords? The sharpest one will do.

I guess that's why the column is called "ONE Fan's Opinion."

I've been looking for an excuse to get a new sword, actually.

As bad as the 2nd (3rd?) Nova ongoing was, I did enjoy it more than that terrible 2nd New Warriors series. And I didn't read the 3rd New Warriors series, but it didn't look like something I cared to read. And though I've always been a New Warriors fan, I always felt like Nova was one of the least consistent and least interesting characters.

I was never sure if Nova was a generic asshole rebel motorcycle riding 20 year old angsty jerk, or a 17 year old who was unusually adept at growing stubble. Larson's run on Nova might have been good if he had written it circa 1993-4, but by '99 nobody was willing to believe Richard Rider was still the teenager he was in the 70's. That said, I'm glad he changed Namorita back to being white skinned, because the blue fish look was just dumb, as was the change in powers.

Also, I was re-reading New Warriors back issues lately and was wondering if you knew whatever happened to Psionex?

While I'm at it, I was looking around wikipedia and learned that Justice and Firestar's engagement is off? When did this happen, and when will writers stop treating the New Warriors like dirt?
