Like everything in this series after the first 2/3 of The Thief, this is best read completely without spoilers.
I’m going to assume anyone reading this has already read the book, and so won’t bother with the plot. (So if you’re reading without having read the book and have no clue what I’m talking about, it’s your own fault.)
Unlike the last two books, this is more a book that I think was good than that I enjoyed. I think because Sophos really isn’t suited for deceit and twistiness and a brilliant reveals, so those don’t work as well with him, unless he’s on the receiving end. (Like Costis. Who, come to think of it, wasn’t mentioned in the book, that I can recall. Now I’m concerned!) And I’m not sure what I think of the implications that that someone is going to end up taking over the world, and Gen’s the better option than the other.
I probably liked the middle part, with Sophos politicking around the court in Attolia, the best, though I liked how his first person narrations were actually his telling Eddis what happened, though I agree with her that he should have mentioned her more. Actually, I could have done with way more Eddis and Attolia, but that’s just me.
