Lured in by the promise of Ashley Tisdale as a Cordelia Chase-like character, I have succumbed to the madness and watched the whole trilogy. They were as saccharine and twee as feared, yet actually pretty decent. Well, the first and third. The second was rather “meh,” and involved character growth resets and such to make the work. If you watch, you can, like, fastforward through the parts that don’t involve Ryan and Sharpay.
I was rather bored by Troy’s jock/artist angst and kinda ignored it in the third movie (though, his jock/artist wangst was the entire plot of the second movie-well, that and Sharpay’s Blair Waldorf impersonation-so maybe it’s better in the third if you aren’t watching it three days after the second), and was annoyed that Gabriella’s soul searching and decision making was largely offscreen, while Troy’s was constantly front and center. I was kind of surprised to learn that Zac Efron actually can act, though. I mean, not super-brilliant, but pretty decent.
It’s basically a fluffy high school romance with moderate angst thrown in and lots of music (pretty decent numbers, actually), but overall enjoyable. This will eternally be my favorite thing to come from it, though:
