I've been watching Vampire Diaries this week* and have been pondering the fact that I absolutely hate do not think any of the human teenaged boys are attractive at all. By which I don't mean "am attracted to" but "think are good looking but are not my type." I noticed this in Gossip Girl, too, but to a lesser degree. The bulk of it, I'm sure, is that I'm 29, and a lot of people I would have found attractive 10 years ago I don't anymore, as my subconscious classification for them is closer to "kids" now than it was then. The Vampire Diaries actors, I suspect, are a little younger than the Gossip Girl actors (and the human actors on Vampire Diaries younger than the actors playing the two vampires-or at least, look it) which may be why I notice it more here.

The point of this post, however, is that I also realized that I don't have the same problem with the younger actresses and whether or not I think they're attractive, which you'd think would be the case.  Thinking on it, I realized that it was because many young actresses in US media have the same standards of attractiveness and sexuality applied to them as "older" actresses do, and are more likely to be made up to fit the same physical mold as actresses 5-10 years older than they are.   And just like "men" in Hollywood don't have as strict rules of attractiveness applied to them, the "boys"  (whether they are teenagers, or look young enough to play them) also have less strict rules applied, and aren't made up to look like younger versions of older actors, with the assumption that they have to suit a certain aesthetic.

I'm sure this is something that has been discussed before, or that other's have thought of long since?  I've just watched very little US TV in recent years featuring multiple characters in the 15-20 range.

(Dangit, I used my only Vampire Diaries icon earlier today, and can't make myself use the same icon twice in a row...)

*Yes, I am watching a vampire show not named "Buffy" or "Spinoff of Buffy." Stop judging me!**

**And by judging, I do not mean "judging for watching a vampire show" but "judging based on previously stated thoughts on vampires/central romantic trope."***

***But so far it kinda...shows you can do these things without being weird or creepy or skeevy for me? Though I do have some problems with it, which I'll get into (and the good) once I've seen a few more episodes. Though, I have to wonder how people got through the first three episodes without either alcohol or someone to snark with. Or both.

I find TVD very interesting. Problematic in some ways, but not all of them, and still interesting enough to catch my attention. I'm very curious as to what you'll think of it.

I dislike all of the male characters so much I can't find any of them attractive. (Except for Stefan, who I am largely indifferent to and sometimes can't stand -- read: during the 'drinking blood is like doing drugs!' bullshit storyline -- and still don't find remotely attractive.)

Double standards everywhere in Hollywood. I hate it.

Sometimes I like Stefan, (dance scene was adorable, y/n?) sometimes I'm indifferent to him -- I find him most charming with Elena, because they're so obviously happy together. I do feel that they do a decent job of having a 'vampire goes to high school' narrative that actually portrays the vampire in question as logically more mature than a lot those around him.

I have trouble with Damon, because while he's a decent antagonist I find myself kind of icked by the prioritization of him versus his victims, and his manpain over their suffering. Sometimes I feel like the show is practically doing the 'tee-hee, isn't he such a rascal!' thing they did with Dean Winchester.

If you think it's finished, it's probably finished. I don't recall a significant feint.
