This is the third of the Hunter Kiss novels, and probably my favorite so far. Book one was quite good, but suffered from the fact that Maxine’s dead mother was a more compelling character than Maxine herself, and the second book focused more on Grant, the requisite supernatural boyfriend (one of the few actually likable ones), than Maxine, but this one is all about Maxine, her heritage, the truth behind her tattoos/demons, and the mythology of the world.

The book begins with a birthday party and the next scene is the aftermath of a murder, with Maxine as the apparent culprit. Except Maxine doesn’t know if she is, because she has partial amnesia, and one of the things she doesn’t remember is her relationship with Grant. Surprisingly, neither of these things is the main focus of the plot, which centers mostly around the truth about Maxine’s ancestress and the demons bound to their matriarchal lineage. (I actually wonder if there’s something in their DNA that makes sure only women are born into her family? In RL of course, it doesn’t work that way, but this is the territory of gods and curses and mythic destinies we’re dealing with her.)

Discussing the actual plot in any way would be very spoilery and I can be stubborn that way, but I very much liked this one.
