In the Dark of Dreams by Marjorie M. Liu
Jan. 4th, 2011 07:12 pmThis is the 10th Dirk & Steele book, and I clearly need to reread the older ones sometime soon, because I seem to have forgotten a lot of the mythology. Not because it’s convoluted (I actually kind of really love it), but because there’s so much of it, and Liu doesn’t really slow down or recap a lot. This interview explains Liu’s approach to her romances pretty well. http://www.newsarama.com/comics/marjorie-liu-dare-romance-101208.html
Jenny is a member of the family of witches that keeps cropping up and causing trouble, usually in the form of The Consortium. Except Jenny is working to Destroy Them All. I initially thought she might be a female Dirk & Steele agent, but no, she’s trying to destroy them all on her own. Ok, she has a sidekick. This is how Nikita got me, too. When she was 12 she saw a silver boy who disappeared into the sea. Now he is an exiled merman who is looking for the power guarded by a murdered water guardian. These goals conveniently overlap.
Words really do not exist for how cracktastic Liu’s books are. This isn’t my favorite Dirk & Steele, but it’s a fun one. Also, Perrin is not actually silver, but has silver scales when he’s in the water, and he does not sparkle. As far as I know.
