Vampire Diaries 2.12

Well that was...not really an awesome return?  Like, at all, except for a few scenes.

 

I'm going to ignore Damon's Pain and how we're apparently meant to sympathize with him when he's insulting Elena and yet another person is being hurt because of his actions (like Jenna stabbing herself, he isn't responsible for the actions of others, but it's still a result of his deliberately angering a potentially dangerous party) and how Rose's death is all about Damon's Pain and his assaulting women is about Damon's Pain because if I fully voice my thoughts on these things, I'll never go to bed.  Also, he is a phenomenal idiot, but we knew that.  Asking Elena to take care of Rose might top the house arrest plan.

(Though, I will mention how really, really creepy I find it that the show is just...so completely oblivious to the fact that he's always around and has relationships with people who have no idea that he's hurt and/or killed someone they love and it's just...this huge oversight of the show's, even back when they were mostly taking Damon seriously.  Also, uhm...why was Rose's dream about a guy she's known less than a month, and not the guy she was with, platonically or otherwise, for 500 years?)

HOWEVER!

1.  LIZ!  Even if only barely.
2.  I...shouldn't, but I kind of love Jules?  Partly just because she's hates Damon, but she's just so...shameless, and all "why must I be surrounded by idiots?"  I feel she and Katherine should team up.
3.  Stefan, if you didn't want another round of sex with your girlfriend, maybe you should have put a shirt on before making out with her?  It's usually a lot easier to hold to it that way.  Also, I think you actually...had good hair.
4.  I spent much of this episode (platonically) shipping Rose/Elena.  I will not attempt to pretend otherwise.  They're just so...weirdly comfortable and uneasy around each other at the same time, but I think that the weirdness made them relax more than around others.  And, well, it was nice to have a protagonist who was willing to protect Elena, but who isn't obsessed with protecting her.
5.  Caroline/Tyler is headed for some epic angst and I...both anticipate and dread it?  It depends on how quickly he learns that she was lying to him to keep Damon from killing him, and if he believes it.  Hopefully, he remembers how floored he was at the "one bite would kill me" thing, and how she wasn't even considering not staying with him next time.
