manga: Gintama Vol 15-21, 23

meganbmooreSomehow, I ended up not having volume 22. Thankfully, Gintama has little continuity, and few lasting changes. It's too busy making puns, being weird, and parodying other shounen.
Speaking of other shounen, mixed somewhere in these volumes is a brilliant parody of Bleach training sequences. This prompted me to check to see if I remembered certain Bleach spoilers re: Ichigo's mother correctly. I did. No one who reads Bleach is allowed to complain about Clamp or Kaori Yuki being depraved or twisted again.
Sorachi, why is it that the first (I think) time you kill someone, it's a woman, and about Hijikata and Okita and their angst and issues and not really...uhm...her. And then you kill a dude, and it's a dramatic redemptive hero's death. The hard side eye, I give it to you. Though you'll have to do a whole lot of annoying things to make me judge you as I judge many other shounen. (Including other shounen I like.) You did have me fooled re: Hadashi, though.
Of course, the only thing you can ever actually take seriously here is Kijikata, and not always then. Ok, and Gin is someone is threatening Kagura or Shinpachi.
Anyway, Hijikata has seriously got to stop wearing anything but his uniform. Anytime he's in a kimono, I still get confuse and forget he isn't SDK!Kyo. And then he got possessed by the otaku sword, and it was Kyoshiro.
Robot Maid army was WHAT and I think I lost track of it. The ghost inn was WHAT with a side of creepy-ish awesome.
We need more of people thinking Zura and Gin are Serious Business and freaking out over them only nope, they're just Gin and Zura and don't turn the deadly stare off unless they're just being weird. Or bored.
Sadly, I'm pretty sure that vol 23 is what Viz said would be the last one that would be published in the US. Yet another series I'll eventually have to read in scans.
