So, I finished the Alyson Noel book that I mentioned this morning. By the end, I could only conclude that Damen had been trying his hardest for 600 years to become an urban legend so he could be all mysterious and secretive about it, and becoming an underwear model was a last ditch effort at that.
Anyway, Twilight is apparently not the only book she kept out to reference while writing. I will now completely spoil the first book. Start skipping if you plan to read it and don't want spoilers.
So, Damen is...the first immortal. The villainess, Drina, is...his wife! Who he made immortal!
Then he dumped her and fell in love with a pure young girl. Who Drina killed. And then the pure young girl was reincarnated and she and Damen met and then Drina promptly killed her again.
And again.
And again.
A few dozen times, apparently.
Somehow, Damen never noticed that every incarnation conveniently died soon after Drina showed up. For the guy who discovered the secret to immortality, he doesn't seem overly bright at times. (Incidentally, all of Ever's previous incarnations died virgins.)
You know, there are plenty of good L. J. Smith books that aren't really a bad thing to use for inspiration.
I don't really think Soul Mate was the best choice, though.
Anyway, I have a couple more books in the series so I'll probably go ahead and read them. TBH, they're absurd for the reasons here and in my other post, but it was decently entertaining and, aside from the Evil Ex aspect and a random rivalry between Ever and her best friend, Haven (No, these really are their names.) I found it less aggravating than a lot of these books.
