These episodes are largely about the wolves forming their dysfunctional pack, and the other characters getting in motion for their own storyline.
Ep. 2 is largely an introduction to Toboe and Darcia. Toboe is our token OCK, and one of the few genuinely cute and endearing ones(like others that actually are cute and endearing-such as Rurouni Kenshin's Yahiko and Samurai Deeper Kyo's Sasuke, he's not perfect and tends to be cocky, but is just a damaged little guy underneath. The only genuinely endearing OCK-outside of Fruits Basket to be purely cute and sweet and woobie is Taiki in Twelve Kingdoms-that poor little guy just needed to be hugged and cuddled.) and Darcia our nominal-at this point-villain.
I like that we're let in on Darcia's motivations immediately...nothing like having the man stand over his comatose wife's body and talking about how the girl you're about to go kidnap can cure her to get your point across. They also convey that he's not evil so much as ruthless-I've always liked the scene when he takes Cheza and asks Cher if Cheza is "vital" to her. I mean, yeah if Cher had gone "Oh please don't take her! If you do my life will be over and I'll kill myself!" he still would have taken Cheza, but it shows that there's still a decent guy in there(for now) and he's still operating off of some sort moral code, he just can't let it get in his way.
We also get to see more of Cher and Hubb's relationship, as well as a bigger clue as to Quent's motivation. Most of the fandom seems to overlook Cher and Hubb altogether, but I rather like them. There's a certain reality to their relationship that's missing in most anime and manga pairings.
I like how, even in human form the wolves are still often shown to be moving as wolves and having wolfish mannerisms. A good example of this is when Tsume is shot and Toboe licks his wound clean(which I'm sure made that fandom go ballistic, but hey...) It looks odd(and even slashy) because we see it in their human forms, but it's such a NATURAL thing because they're wolves and that's how wolves clean would, and it's just natural for Toboe, who's not yet full grown to instinctively try to tend to Tsume, who he's latched on to as a role model. Other good examples are when they're running and jumping-they LOOK like they're doing Superman's "tall buildings in a single bound" thing, but if you look at HOW their moving, it very much looks like the way a dog or wolf runs and jumps and matches with what we see when they ARE in wolf form-or when they're lounging around-when they lay on their back and look at the sky, it looks like the normal "lying down with arms as pillow" bit, but there's something "off" about it because that;s not how theie bodies move.
And it is 3:15 am, or there'd be more.
