Just a bit of babble before heading for bed.
You know, a month or two from now, I may not remember much about this one beyond it being amazingly pretty, having lots of angst and my loving Sorata/Arashi, and it's Clamp, so I'm not only braced for it to go FUBAR(though, can anything ever be as FUBAR as the second half of Revolutionary Girl Utena?) but I rather expect it, but I'm having a blast watching it, and that's really all that matters.
And I went longer than I planned to, but oh well.
*resolves that one day, she will talk about Sorata without comparing him to Benitora*
*goes to bed because she has to go feed her brother's dog in the morning and that thing is so huge it could kill her in one pounce if she goes by too late*
Something about this pairing really gets to me, I think because Sorata is just so accepting of his fate. I touched on this before, but since he was a child, Sorata has known that he's fated to do two things: to stand beside and serve Kamui, and to die protecting a woman. As far as the first part goes, well hey, if he has to help Kamui, they might as well be friends, wven if(as does happen) he has to win Kamui over by sheer force of willpower. Sorata's never met a stranger and even the people he fights are his friends-heck, I think he views fighting a guy as being the perfect way to make friends. He's friendly, open and good natured, always up for a good fight and utterly loyal(have I mentioned how much he reminds me of Benitora from Samurai Deeper Kyo?) And as far as that "dying to protect a woman" thing goes, well, his only request there is that she be beautiful, other than that he's fine with it. Why? Because hey, he's going to die anyway, it's kind of an unavoidable thing, and really "dying protecting a woman" rather indicates dying to do a good thing, what more could he ask for?
As soon as he meets Arashi, he knows that he's a woman worth dying for(again, Benitora comparison...course, Benitora fell for the wrong girl-stupid Tora, wake up and go pay attention to Mahiro already-but still...) and decides that she'll be the one he dies for. Arashi doesn't get this at all...shouldn't he be trying to AVOID his death, instead of cheerfully heading towards it and sticking with the person he believes will be the cause of it? And doesn't she get any say in the matter? The idea of just happily going to your death, not because it's something you have to do, such as a hopeless battle, but because it's going to happen anyway so why not enjoy yourself until then, is just alien to her, and the fact that this weird, outgoing, overly friendly guy announced that she was the woman he would die for five minutes after meeting her shakes her composure and gets to her, and starts wearing down her composure.
And, like most things in X, I really like the visual of the two...the big, burly, slightly disheveled jock-brawler-type and the small, elegant warrior woman. And hey, it has the "protective guy being protective of a woman who doesn't NEED him to be protective" thing going for it.

Poor, poor Fuma. I pretty much knew where it was going with him, and what he'd do when "Normal" Fuma wasn't in charge anymore(though I expected Kotori's death to be much later in the series, though I suspect she'll be back, as a ghost of angel) but rather "the other Kamui" Incidentally, I find it interesting that, left to his own devises, the hero is a guy who really doesn't care about anyone or who gets hurt as a result of his actions and conflicts, except for Fuma and Kotori, his childhood friends, and his decision as far as being a Dragon of Heaven or a Dragon of Earth wasn't dictated by any sense of right or wrong, but rather, what he thought would make Kotori happy(OTP or other loved one>>everyone else on Earth=big kink of Megan's, even though she would want to be a random resident of that reality.) Meanwhile the villain-when in control of himself-is a nice guy who's protective and supportive of everyone, and in, a way, he was forced to be evil when Kamui chose to be good, because it's his deestiny to to Kamui's mirror. If Kamui had decided to be a Dragon of Earth and destroy the present reailty to make way for a new one, then Fuma would have become a Dragon of Heaven, and the hero.
I also really like this dreamseer guy. Most of the characters have a "look, angst, angst, aaaannnnggggsssstttt!!" quailty to them, but with him and Sorata(and, by default, Arashi) it's a feeling of tragedy instead of angst, I think because there's an acceptance of fate with both. And seriously, the only contact the guy has is in his dreams with people who are about to die, and all he can do for them is show them a happy dream as they die, and inhabit their dead bodies briefly to carry out a dying wish for them. Talk about setting off a person's "WOOBIE!!!" alert.
