Gundam Wing eps 36-40

meganbmooreAnd in episode 39...HEERO VOWS TO KILL RELENA! AGAIN!
I'll get Wu Fei out of the way first, since he didn't do much. It's Wu Fei's turn at the Quatre act, and he is going around, randomly blowing things up and ranting about how all evil must be eliminated from space. At one point, he meets Noin and stops to listen...either because Noin induces sanity on everyone but Zechs, or because Wu Fei actually has some common sense. I think it's both. Noin talks to him quite sensibly about how they need his help and he could help everyone by joining them, but he rambles something about not trusting anyone and takes off. He blows more stuff and people up for a while until Romefeller tricks him and his new gundam gets blown up.
Quatre gets Sandrock back. Supposedly it's to help defend Sancs, but really, I think he was just depressed without it. Zechs is in space angsty over Relena's decisions and comes to Earth and just randomly fights Heero. I have no idea why. Except that their gundams told them to. There was lots of flashing and swirly eyes and I think I spotted a matrix screen. Later, they sit and chat about how they don't like each other, and then they swap gundams. YES! THEY TRADED GUNDAMS! No, IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE TO ME, EITHER!!! Zechs babbles about hoe Treize would have wanted him to have Epyon anyway and Heero...I think Heero just realized that he was better off with the slightly-less-crazy-making gundam. Heero, Quatre and Noin fight for Relena *sigh...why?* but eventually Relena is forced to surrender and Romefeller blows up Sancs. Farewell, o Utena-esque school. Dorothy gleefully cackles in the background.
Zechs joins up with one of the factions...I think it used to be a Treize faction, Quatre heads to space, Noin goes to hunt for other gundam pilots to recruit, and Heero goes off to suicidally angst with the crazy-making gundam.
The leader of Romefeller, who I gather is Dorothy's grandfather(I think Wu Fei blows him up later) spouts something about how Relena will be the perfect figurehead for them to work behind...AND THEY MAKE HER THE QUEEN OF THE WORLD!!! Duo and I have the same reaction to this. She also dissolves all national boundaries. Heero realizes that if he kills her, it will ruin all of Romefeller's plans...and vows to kill her.
This is the supposed epic romance of the show, 39 episodes into it, 10 episodes from the end. We are still at square one WTF?-ness. Honestly, despite how it make somehow appear, I don't require shipping or romance in my fiction, but if it's there, can't it at least make some logical sense on some plane of reality?
Anyway, Relena sees Heero at the balcony and silently wills him to JUST KILL HER ALREADY when they're distracted by Wu Fei blowing a bunch of things, including the leader of Romefeller, up and then losing his gundam(Heero, in a rare moment of wiseness, comments that Wu Fei was being used) and then Zechs...declaring that he's taking over the universe. Or something. Heero isn't impressed.
Meanwhile, one faction(I think the one that recruited Zechs a few eps later) has been trying to recruit Duo. Duo tells them he's the lone wolf god of war or something and flees to go hang out on the park bench with Hilde(may I just express my annoyance that we basically went from first meeting to cohabitation? Not even a "Oh hey, how ya been since you lost your job because of me?" "Oh, fine...any of your friends go crazy and blow up colonies lately?" Ah well...) Hilde decides to take him to the circus to cheer him up. HE SEES A CLOWN! THE CLOWN HAS KILLER BANGS! IT HAS NO FEAR! IT'S TROWA!! Duo forgets he's sworn of male suicidals and gets bouncy and rushes off to see him! BUT HE HAS AMNESIA! OH NOES!
Catherine yells at Duo for upsetting Trowa and talks about how his life was too painful before and she wants to protect him. Duo understands. So do I. I mean, forget the blatant conditioning, the getting blown up and the floating around in space on low oxygen for who knows how long...I think the fact that his cheerful little buddy TRIED TO KILL HIM AND ACTUALLY BLEW HIM UP broke his brain between all repair. He was clearly pretty much having a breakdown trying to cling to reality during all that. Later, the rebel faction tries to recruit Duo again at his and Hilde's place(Hilde has seen and read enough anime and manga to know that smart girlfriends stay hidden so they can't be used as hostages later, and stays out of sight.) At some point, Hilde tells Duo that the Winner family is active in space again, and Duo realizes that it mean Quatre is back in space, forgets that, the last he heard, Quatre was cackling maniacally and blowing up colonies, and gets bouncy and heads off to see him. They get all bouncy and giddy, then Duo tells Quatre that Trowa is alive and Quatre gets more bouncy and giddy and rushes off to the circus. Quatre gets remarkably teary-eyed when he sees Trowa(and I think I almost saw a shojo sparkle) but understands that his TRYING TO KILL HIS PROBABLY BEST FRIEND CAUSED AMNESIA and leaves. Later, the colony is attacked and Trowa's conditioning kicks back in. He still has amnesia, but he understands his destiny is to be a suicidal pilot, so he heads off to space to help Quatre. They join up with Noin and act remarkably sane and logical.
At some point, DUO SHOWS UP AND SAVES THEM IN BATTLE IN THE MOST AWESOME SCENE THAT I WATCHED FIVE TIMES ALREADY!!! Duo makes sure everyone understands that he brought Deathscythe to save the guy who blew Deathscythe up a while back. Everyone but Trowa understands. Trowa still has amnesia so he's clueless.
(Note: SOMEONE FREAKING GO FIND HEAVYARMS SO TROWA CAN GET HIS MEMORIES BACK AND GO BACK TO BEING CRAZY ANALYTICAL SUICIDAL SMART!!)
Later, the three boys(all acting remarkably sane and together) and Noin see Zechs declare himself ruler of the universe, or whatever he did. The boys do some "WTF?"-ing while Noin does some face palming as she realizes she's left him unsupervised for half the series.
I honestly do think Noin has some sort of sanity inducing power or something...all the pilots act a lot saner and more reasonable around her, and Trowa and Heero even show signs of being sociable. Plus, Zechs wasn't half as crazy when she was around.
