More from the manga, from an early volume...as far as I know, everyone on my flist who's reading or watching FMA is well past this, but...

HUGHES!!!!   Hughes Hughes Hughes!!!!!!

*cries her eyes out*

That was one of the more traumatizing manga deaths I've read, simply because he's the eager uncle/father/big brother type who never dies...he's supposed to live forever and be telling stories to kids 50 years in the future and making out his role to be much bigger than it is.

In FMA, the only death that would be more traumatizing is Armstrong...if that happens, anime or manga, I'm going to need emotional support.

That is the most traumatizing death in the show ever.

The way the show is set up is that the final song plays over some credits and animation, then when it's over it ends on one final shot from the episode you just saw.

The final shot from the ep of Hughes' death had me sitting there with my mouth hanging the hell open. I was shocked and upset and damn, did they smack me upside the head with how they handled the whole episode. In fact, I didn't know anything about the final shot UNTIL that ep because after he died and they had the final scene, I couldn't hit stop. I was too stunned.

And then I saw the final shot and started crying.

Eep! Can't wait for you to get there. I so need to rewatch that series.

Wait..

It can't possibly be more traumatizing than his death in the manga...it's was so horrible...and then just when the wounds had started to heal, the brothers and Winry found out about it and they were ripped back open.

Hmm...state alchemy exam time...the president will probably show up...*finds popcorn to throw at him for traumatizing Al in the manga*

Heh, I at least did say show, not the series, though. You'll have to let us know if the death in the series differs.

I just remember being really upset. I was watching them with a friend of mine in Chicago (we'd start the show at the same time and have it open in a window while on IM) and we were both just stunned which is why we let the credits roll.

In fact, FMA provided us with the way we start nearly all of our shows now. The second theme is this "Ready Steady Go" song which he HATED but grew on me after a while. Whenever we'd start, we'd go Ready! Steady! Go!" and then hit play.

/dork rant

Anime themes are like that...listen to them often enough, and even the most annoying ones become addictive. About how far in is Hughes's death?

It's 52 eps, right? I'll say about halfway-ish because I don't want you to know exactly when it happens. You should be surprised in case it doesn't happen the same way as in the manga.

(I knew I LJ'd about that event, and my one fma-tagged item pinpoints the episode. Go me in being so obsessed I have to write on LJ about it!...

er, wait, you did the same thing. heh.)

But it's worth obsessing and remaining traumatized over.

That was such a huge shock, I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the manga! I'm still not over it, you just don't kill characters like Hughes!

Yes. They outlive the main characters, not die near the beginning of the series.

*puts up protective fences around Armstrong*
