loot roundup, part 3
Aug. 10th, 2006 07:59 pmSigh...can no longer use meebo on the other 'puters. Much suckage. Much boredom, too, as AIM pickings are slow, today.
Also, according to USPS, Full Metal Alchemist DVDs were delivered today...I shall investigate when I get home.
Anyway...
Annihilation Ronan #4: Urm...big fight...and...uhm...big fight. Issue 3 of this mini is the only issue I really retained...maybe because Ronan is the most obscure character used in Annihilation, and there's nothing more to him now than there was in the first issue. Nova, Solver Surfer and Super Skyull are all characters most Marvel readers at least know about, and they all got more explanation than Ronan. As a result, all their minis were considerably more interesting. Fortunately, it's now time for he Main Event to begin.
Astro City Samaritan Special: At long last, more Astro City(and the shining light of today's comics) Issues exploring long term, bitter antagonists at peace can be good or bad, and this one was good. Plus, we learn that Samaritan and Winged Victory are still a thing, which is good. Now to chain Busiek and Anderson to their desks so we'll get more Astro City.
Birds Of Prey #96: Ok, I'm arbitrarily blaming James for this. The kid didn't annoy me until last issue, when Dinah decided to keep her. Then James and talked about that, and now I'm grating my teeth when she's on panel. *shakes fist* And while I'm shaking my fist, those last few pages had BETTER be a red herring and it better be either an impostor or someone Babs is training. Or else I may be forced to drop the book and foreswear Gail Simone for undoing one of the best superhero ideas out there(and the book has already gone a long ways from what made it's earliest issues so great, it's just still been good) On the subject of Black Alice, I think this is a character with a lot of potential, but who no one really knows what direction to go with. I think Willingham had some idea, but had to give the character back. Simone seems to have an idea for her now, but I'm not sure about it.
Civil War Young Avengers & Runaways #1: Maybe it's because I have the horrors of the recent New Warriors series rattling around in my head(same writer) but this issue was far, far betterthan expected. Writing-wise, the characters were pretty on target, if a bit watered down, and the story, though the regular "young teams meet up, misunderstand, fight, make peace" schtick, is good enough. As for the art, well...some worked, some didn't. Victor looks like he should look...bred to both destroy the world and be the perfect hero, and rather ansty about that. The flipside, though, is that Chase, who's supposed to be a prettyboy, took an ugly pill. Similarly, I like the way he draws both Kate and Nico's hair, but both need a brush even more than usual. Also, all registration endforcers just earned my enmity. Just so you know. And I wasn't fond of them anyway.
JSA Classified #14: Ok, ready for regular Johns-written JSA to come back. The first 2 arcs of this series(Power Girl and the villains arc) were both excellent, and then Flash/Wildcat and Green Lantern/Sandal Savage were both interesting(the second made more so by including Savage's history) but the further I get from Johns-JSA, the more I realize this is just a stand-in. This issue was rather dull, which it shouldn't be, as I like all 3 female characters involved. Somehow, I think I'll like this book more when it's not the ONLY JSA I'm getting. Then again, The creative team was less than stunning.
Runaways Vol 2 #18: Graargh. I read the entire issue online a few days after the issue came out(thank you
the_hostel) but I was still sad. And mad. Would have rather they spared my nerves and offed Molly, or had the guts to off Nico(as the book centers more around her than any other individual character, and her death would shake things up as much.) Only one death would have upset me more, and one other as much(and contextual clues from earlier issues have pretty much confirmed that that one as about half a step from the deep end after this issue) STill, quite the good issue...it and the last couple of issues(since Karolina's return) are pretty much the best the book has been since the Excelsior arc.
Supergirl And The Legion Of Super-Heroes #20: Nice to see Supergirl is currently driving everyone in the book batty. Her persence(and delusions) are entertaining, but I'm ready for stint to be over('cept then all we'll have is Punishergirl, who I'm liking less and less despite really liking her at first and I'm really only getting her book for Power Girl at this point, despite curiosity as to where the story is going) so we can get back to normal. Brainy has truly gone off the deep end, which is quite fun. Plus, my two favorite Legion members got cameos, so yay!
