Currently watching Perfect Girl Evolution[profile] calixa(but not posting...plenty of exclamations of shock and awe in IMs, though)

*rubs hands together gleefully*

*ponders the mystery of why she has no icons for the series*

I did a similar meme recently, but this one is just different enough(and there are several newbies since then)

Yoinked from [profile] shediao.

Choose a fandom and I will tell you:
1. The character most likely to fall in love with the wrong person
2. The character whom I'm embarrassed to admit I adore
3. The character that would send me screaming in the opposite direction IRL despite being fascinating in fiction.
4. The character with the most annoying personality quirks
5. The character I most admire and why
6. The character with the worst temper
7. The character most likely to fail at everything
8. The pairings I prefer in canon
9. The pairings I prefer in fanon (I rarely go for fanon pairings but maybe I'll answer if you ask specifically?)
10. The character with the most personal growth in canon

These are very simple, silly icons(and most of the jokes have probably already been used up) made mostly as therapy.

At lunch I went to Waldenbooks armed with 3 30% off coupons.  My goal(which was attained) was Vol 1 of Hikkatsu! Strike a Blow to Vivify.  It has a heroine who was raised by pigeons, a hero who is eternally traumatzed by being chased by a backhoe and a sensei who scolds his student for using karate to fight.  To properly understand why I anticipate this manga so, click here and here.  Also:  same creator as Those Who Hunt Elves(which is not a favorite anime of mine, but one whose amazing OTT-ness I can appreciate)

As I already ordered the new Fruits Basket, Samurai Deeper Kyo and Basara from Rightstuf(may i mention that the ONE TIME this year Waldenbooks gets Basara in, it's the one time I already ordered it elsewhere?) I got Vol 1 of Zombie Loan, about zombies in high school(and what appears to be a rather Mary Sue heroine, but I'll be optimistic) and Yoki Koto Kiku, which is supposed to be a dark comedy cat-and-mouse with chibi demon hunters on a treasure hunt or some such.

Also, apparently my Bleach icons are being popular, which kinda surprises me...

I shall now do a couple silly work things and then blog Hikkatsu! Strike A Blow to Vivify as I read it.

ETA: [profile] calixastarted watching the Zombie Loan anime.  I AM SO GLAD I GOT THAT MANGA AT LUNCH!!!!  THEY HAVE MORTAGES ON LIFE!  AND THEY SWAP HANDS!  And one can summon a sword to fight zombies and the other a gun.

Ok, let's get something straight about me readingthis book, the back cober reads:

In Earth's distant future, geomagnetic abnormalities make every day a struggle to survive.  The Human race faces its greatest threat--not from aliens, meteors or global warming, but ordinary, everyday appliances!  With even the most basic of machine going haywire, one man holds the hope of Earth in his hands: karate student Shota, who can beat any appliance into submission with his Repair Blow technique!

The back cover shows the heroine attacking a vending machine with a pigeon sitting on her head.

Does anyone REALLY think I'm reading this for high quality plot or storytelling?  Or even characterization?  I shall now begin.

Neef is a mortal changeling, a human child taken and raised by the fae as an infant.  While most stories dealing with changelings involve the changeling trying to return to the world of their birth, Neef is perfectly happy with her life as a "country girl" in the world of New York In Between, and has no desire to leave.  Ever.  Her fairy Godmother, Astris, is one of New York In Between's foremost folklorists, leaving Neef with an even better understanding of the fae and tradition than many fae themselves, and she's an expert at maneuvuring her way through "her" world, including how to evade the Wild Hunt, who love nothing more than to prey on mortal changelings.

What she doesn't know, however, is that the only thing that allows mortal changelings to travel In Between so easily and escape the Wild Hunt is a geas laid on them by the Green Lady of Central Park, a geas that, once broken, she is obligated to lift.  Neef breaks her geas when she sneaks out to an annual dance she's always been forbidden to attend.  Almost before she can register it, she's been abducted by a Tengu Bogeyman to be his entry in a contest for disobedient children, where she meets Jenny(called Changeling) the fairy changeling she was traded with at birth.  Neef is impatient and reckless, but quick witted and clever.  Changeling is brilliant and amazingly literal minded, but has the social skills of a rock.  Together, they escape the Tengu and strike a deal with the Green Lady to have Changeling Returned home and to put Neef back under the Green Lady's protection.  Together,  they outsmart the Mermaid Queen, rescue all of Broadway, match guile with the Dragon of Wall Street and make the Bull cry and the Bear laugh, and finally, outsmart the Green Lady herself, with nothing to their advantage but Neef's wits and Changeling's intellect.

The book works within the structure and stereotypes of classic fables, but places them in the modern, urban world(without relying on hot vampires and werewolves to carry the book, thankyouverymuch.)  It simultaneously plays homage to all the classic mythic tropes and turns them on their heads.  Despite being a YA book, it's more than adult enough for adult readers(but still nice and clean for the kids)  having a complex world, but a straightforward and engaging tail.  More importantly, unlike Eragon other young adult novels, neither lead is grating or annoying.  Being 11(But almost 12!) year olds, both Neef and Changeling have annoying traits, but neither is an annoying character.
