Stargate SG-1: Season 9, eps 1-4

So:

1.  I miss my Sam.  And my Jack.  And my Sam/Jack.  But I still like, a lot.

2.  I like Vala.  She amuses me.  I'm not sure what I think of this Vala/Daniel thing.  Most of their scenes make me think of a pair of five year olds who need to be sent to other rooms, though there have been a few scenes that make me think there could be potential if the writers ever have them do anything but bicker.  I don't think the fact that Daniel is my least favorite member of SG-1's OT4(and actually, I prefer Jonas to him) helps.  I'm fond of him, but his arrogance regularly makes me want to smack him upside the head.  I hope, though, that Vala gets to do more than hang on and annoy Daniel.  At least she gets some great dialogue.

3.  Daniel with a beard is actually worse that Teal'c with hair.

4.  I like Cameron.  Everything they did wrong with Sheppard in SGA that had me tearing out my hair(though it was in conjunction with the overall horrible gender issues that were just amplified in trying to tell me how awesome he was) is working for me here.  Granted, part of it is that with 8 years of the series under their belt, they can't really go the "prove the main character is right by always having everyone else be wrong, even when he's wrong" route, but I think the healthy dose of hero worship and respect for authority helps.  He's the "All-American military good guy superhero" type the SG writers are so in love with, and just as much "The New Jack O'Neill" as SGA tried to play Sheppard as, but works for me ever so much better.  He still has the snark and the overall attitude, but he also has restraint and respect for authority, not to mention common sense, that makes me think he's a worthy followup.  (And I'm hoping Sheppard works better for me in s2 of SGA...the actor struggled mightily against a squashing script, if nothing else...if not, there's still Teyla, and I do anticipate the very pretty man with dreads, who I'm assured I'll like.)

5.  But Cameron is completely an AU John Crichton.

6.  Teal'c needs to get to do something.  Despite how much I'm enjoying his annoyance at Cameron always dragging him into things, he needs to do more.

&.  I also like the new base personnel, specifically the asian doctor lady and the new general.  Somebody tell me their names, because I keep forgetting to learn them.

linkblogging stuff

Since a few of you have asked about this and others have mentioned it, not knowing that it's in pretty much my backyard:  The police raided a polygamist compound outside Eldorado, TX where young girls(as young as 12, I believe) were being married off, resulting in over 400 children being relocated to San Angelo(where I live) making this the biggest family law case...uhm...ever, I think.  Here is an article that sums up the current status and links to the background.

Unless people want me to, I likely won't be commenting on this much unless it afects my personal life.  Not because I don't care(far from it), but because I expect it'll be pretty well publicized by people far better at such things than I.

On the fannish front, there's a meme going around about female characters you love, who seem to get grief from fandom.  I've tried doing it a few times, but my list is far, far too long.  However,

[profile] rawles  has a post that pretty well explains why it's hard for me to do so, and my reactions to most of fandom in general.

Especially this part:

[profile] sainfoin_fields has coined terms for two afflictions from which I currently suffer (she too has these issues): Fictional Lesbianism and Anyanka Syndrome.

Fictional Lesbianism is pretty simple. The vast majority of the time, I will care about, invest in, identify with, empathize with, and feel the pathos of female characters exponentially more than male ones. It's not that I don't love many a dude; I am, in fact, very, very fond of boys and I like imaginary ones best of all. But most of the time, there needs to be a strong female presence for me to muster up some caring, in general, and I will usually love my favourite girl characters more than my favourite males ones.

The second affliction is more complicated and troublesome than the first. Anyanka Syndrome is quite simply the INSANELY INCONVENIENT compulsion to be completely obsessed with any mistreated female character, be the source of her mistreatment canon, fandom, or some mixture of both. My list of Leftover Ladies of Fiction is long and frustrating and emotionally draining.

And these two things...they pretty much completely control everything I ever do in fandom.

She also says a lot of things that I've tried to say before, but failed pretty miserably at.

But to end on a cheerier note:  Many on my f-list are suddenly watching The Romance of Red Dust.  I have no idea how they discovered it, but it thrills me to see the posts on the subject popping up.

[personal profile] rachelmanija  posts here and here
[personal profile] oyceter  posts here
[personal profile] shewhohashope  posts here
[personal profile] coffeeandink  posts here

Only Rachel's second post covers past ep 5.  GO READ THEM!!!  And...if I have missed a post, tell me.

Also, [personal profile] yhlee  posts on the first three episodes of Damo.  Go read that, too.

Wolf Hunting by Jane Lindskold

So, for anyone else who's read this far in this series, is it just me, or did the events in this book feel rather...random?  If I'm completely honest, I'm not entirely certain what's going on in the last 200 or so pages in the grand scheme of things.  (Which is not to be interpretted as "I didn't like the book.")

anyway...

Step 2:  Pay through Paypal.

Step 3:  Check e-mail.

Step 4:  SEE FOUR ORDER CONFIRMATIONS!!!

Step 5:  Panic.

Step 6:  Log into paypal.

Step 7:  Breathe again at seeing only one payment made.
