So, I just saw tail end of the Kim Possible finale.  I may have missed crucial plotpoints, but...

I just realized that it's "try to depress single people" season.  Thankfully, I am incapable of thinking that being single means that there's something lacking in my life.  Not that I have objections to changing the single status.  Regardless, I think I will hole up in a bunker with a few stacks of books for the next two weeks.

This is the first book in a multi-author romance series from Dorchester a few years back. Set in an AU Las Angeles, the city has been renamed Crimson City due to the wars between vampires and werewolves that only recently ended. At peace now, the vampires live in skyscrapers, effectively forming their own city, and the werewolves have a subterranean city below. In between the two are the humans, who now serve as moderators between the two races and hope they don’t get wiped out in another war. The vampires are aristocratic and seem to largely be pacifistic, while the werewolves, though not seen more in this book, are expectedly more earthy and bestial. The general setup reminds me of Underworld, though not completely. For one thing, I actually think more than one vampire here is capable of tying her own shoes. (I’m sorry, but most of the vampires in Underworld just seemed so wimpy…)

Fleur Dumont is the black sheep of the Dumont family, the clan that leads the vampires. When her brothers are killed by a mech-a cyborg rumored to be created by the humans, but whose existence they deny-she becomes the head of her family despite no one ever expecting-or wanting-her to have to step up. Other vampires are dying too and DNA evidence for humans, vampires and werewolves are found on them, with other evidence pointing to the werewolves breaking the truce. To get to the bottom of things, and to gain her people’s respect, Fleur contracts with the humans to work with Dain Reston, the head of Battlefield Operations, a human organization responsible for keeping peace in the city. Dain hates the vampires for killing his wife, even though he has no memories of anything before her death in the wars, but he and his partner, Cyd, were the ones who first tracked the mech that killed Fleur’s brothers.

If you’ve been here long, then you know that I’m more than tired of most vampire stories, and have been for some time. However, I liked Dorchester’s other multi-author series, 2176 a good bit, so I thought I’d check this one out. The worldbuilding and political structure are pretty interesting, and I like the reversal in the typical human/vampire relations from most vampire romances. I really liked Maverick’s 2176 book, The Shadow Runners, but found her Shomi title, Wired confusing, but with an interesting cyberpunk concept. This one is closer to Shadow Runners for me, though I prefer 2176’s futuristic Sci-Fi setting. I also can’t help but think that it would have worked better as urban fantasy than as a romance novel.

Went out to go to work and the battery is dead.  At least, I hope that's what it was.  CURSES!  At least I'm at home, and this wasn't when I get off work at midnight or while I'm running errands or anything.
