Nobody warned me about the part where Arima grabs Yukino, shoves her against the wall, and yells that he’ll never leave her.

I mean yeah, “I’ll never leave you” sounds better than “I’ll never let you go” BUT WE DID NOT APPROVE OF THAT AND WERE DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED! We thought Arima was not going to be that kind of shoujo hero!

*sigh*

Maybe it was a one time thing? I approve of the makeover he got during summer break, but not if it’s coming with more of that. (Also, I really wish shoujo heroines didn’t respond to that kind of thing be reassuring them of their love, but would punch the guy in the face and beat it and make him work to earn forgiveness for that.)

So, as you may or may not have noticed, we are somewhat prone here to being drawn to bad fiction. We try hard to resist. We truly do. We usually succeed with books, as we tend to have more investment there. This does not always work out.

Anyway, I was supposed to have the afternoon off before heading to the parents' later, and then out of town with them until sometime Sunday. But at lunch Mom asked me to do a couple things for her, so that didn't work out. Anyway, mixed in was checking at the UBS for a book. They didn't have it, but I did stumble across Pati Nagle's The Betrayal:

The noble and magical aelven were riven by war when a rogue clan embraced a forbidden source of magic: the drinking of blood. In the bitter fighting that ensued, the vampiric Clan Darkshore were cast out of the aelven and driven across the Ebon Mountains. Stripped of their various clan colors, they were thenceforth known only as “alben,” hated and shunned. An uneasy peace now holds over the land, but it is whispered that Shalár, the beautiful and bloodthirsty queen of the alben, is readying a surprise attack to win back all that was lost–and none can say where or when she will strike.

The fate of the clans will depend on two young aelven lovers, Eliani and Turisan, who are blessed with a legendary gift: the fabled power of mindspeech. But this ability comes with great risks. Time is running out as the alben mount their attack–and their ultimate betrayal.

Now, in case you went blind from self-defense at the cringeworthy descriptions and aelven and "Random letters and creative spelling totally make words!"  there are ELVEN VAMPIRES.

Seriously.

Vampire elves.

It called to me.  Against my better judgment.  I may toss it in my bag in case I finish the books that are actually probably good.

Dollhouse stealth cancelation?

You know, the last show I watched as it was airing was Dresden Files, which also had a stealth cancelation that dragged out for months.  Maybe my actually watching when everyone else is watching kills shows?  Before that, I think, was Dark Angel.  (I haven't watched shows as they were airing much since high school.  Can you tell?)

ETA:  And for better or for worse, maybe not.  I get a headache trying to understand the ins and outs involved here.  Uhm...I have no idea if I wanted it cancelled or renewed anyway?

Two conversations so far this evening:

Wolf (cousin who is coming out tonight and riding with us to meet his parents and then coming back with us on Sunday): "Hi Megan!  I got started a little later than planned."
Me:  "That's fine.  Have you eaten?"
Wolf:  "Yeah, with my friends."
Me:  "Aunt Elaine made you briskit."
Wolf: "I shall be hungry when I get there!"

(She almost never cooks!  Even when Myles and I still lived here, I cooked more than she did.)

QUESTION!  Should Wolf be bored and ask if I have more books in the car, should I subject him to VAMPIRE ELVES and TELEPATHIC BONDS?  Or should I let him think I actually have, you know, taste?

Also, apparently Squeaker ran off sometime last night, making Mom worried.

Me:  "Do you want me to drive around the block* and see if she's there?"
Mom: "No, no..."
Me:  "Ring the kitty bell and see if she comes."
Mom:  "No, there's no need."
*time passes*
Mom:  "I'm worried about Squeaker, let me go check *random closet/outbuilding*"
Me:  "Ring the kitty bell."
Mom: "No, no..."
*times passes*
Mom:  "I hope Squeaker shows up before we leave."
Me:  "I'm ringing the kitty bell."
Mom:  "I doubt it will do any good, but go ahead."
Me:  *rings kitty bell*
Squeaker:  *paws on glass door about a minute later*
Me:  *lets in*
Squeaker:  *sprawls out on floor* "You may pet me now, human who randomly shows up when regular humans leave.  Or to eat."
Me:  *pets*

Also, I think my camera is broken!  I do not want it to be broken, especially since I've barely used it!
