So, as you may or may not have noticed, we are somewhat prone here to being drawn to bad fiction. We try hard to resist. We truly do. We usually succeed with books, as we tend to have more investment there. This does not always work out.
Anyway, I was supposed to have the afternoon off before heading to the parents' later, and then out of town with them until sometime Sunday. But at lunch Mom asked me to do a couple things for her, so that didn't work out. Anyway, mixed in was checking at the UBS for a book. They didn't have it, but I did stumble across Pati Nagle's The Betrayal:
The noble and magical aelven were riven by war when a rogue clan embraced a forbidden source of magic: the drinking of blood. In the bitter fighting that ensued, the vampiric Clan Darkshore were cast out of the aelven and driven across the Ebon Mountains. Stripped of their various clan colors, they were thenceforth known only as “alben,” hated and shunned. An uneasy peace now holds over the land, but it is whispered that Shalár, the beautiful and bloodthirsty queen of the alben, is readying a surprise attack to win back all that was lost–and none can say where or when she will strike.
The fate of the clans will depend on two young aelven lovers, Eliani and Turisan, who are blessed with a legendary gift: the fabled power of mindspeech. But this ability comes with great risks. Time is running out as the alben mount their attack–and their ultimate betrayal.
Now, in case you went blind from self-defense at the cringeworthy descriptions and aelven and "Random letters and creative spelling totally make words!" there are ELVEN VAMPIRES.
Seriously.
Vampire elves.
It called to me. Against my better judgment. I may toss it in my bag in case I finish the books that are actually probably good.

Date: 2009-04-09 07:51 pm (UTC)Take heart, though; surely it can't be worse than that other book (http://crevette.livejournal.com/113659.html) with elven vampires.

Date: 2009-04-09 09:05 pm (UTC)*shakes head* I love how mindspeech is a 'FABLED POWER' when in most fantasy universes it's one of those 'Oh that's all you do? Piff.'
I want to know how this one ends up if you pick it up.
