Jul. 2nd, 2013 06:15 pmAs far as new-ish-to-DVD Hollywood movies go, I've seen Anna Karenina (stylistically amazing but kinda dull, and obviously only bits and pieces of a larger story. Also, while Kiera Knightley did a perfectly decent job, she was outshown by a lot of actresses in much smaller parts), Gangster Squad (nothing remotely original, but pretty enjoyable and with good performances), and Oz the Great and Powerful (Only because others wanted to watch it, and I disliked it even more than I expected, and wonder if someone actually sat down with a list of sexist and otherwise faily fantasy tropes) and have no interest in seeing The Hobbit or Hansel and Gretel: Witchhunters. I'm somewhat interested in Jack the Giant-Slayer and Beautiful Creatures, but don't have high expectations for either. (I did for BC, until I learned it was about the witch heroine's "normal guy" love interest, who the trailers made look fairly minor.)

Be warned: it does have an "honest farm girl as love-interest and vehicle to dude's self-actualization" subplot. That said, 80% of the movie is about fracking, energy companies and farmland, it's super interesting, accessible enough to watch with non-policy wonks, and I would have watched it even if I wasn't on an airplane.
