 I'm 8 episodes into the sageuk drama Jung Yi, Goddess of Fire, and pretty sure it would be more accurate if they named it Jung Yi, Master of Accidentally  Getting Arrested/Almost Executed For Treason.

I say that out of love, mind you (this show is great, though Jung Yi's adult actress isn't as good as her child actress yet, though I admit to a bias in favor of Jin Ji Hee) but 8 episodes in, and she's on her 5th round of being in trouble for some sort of theft/accidentally getting caught up in treasonous thing, and that's not including the 2 times Gwanghae just pretended nothing happened.  At this point, Tae Do (aka, obligatory very tall and pretty surrogate brother with a sword and long flowing hair. You know what I mean, all sageuk heroines have them these days)  is going to die of exhaustion before the show is halfway over.

heh! Oh dear.
I really like the starting concept of the story, but I've seen too many criticisms to try it, given limited time. (I haven't watched anything at all since Twenty Again ended.)

I haven't seen much talk about it in general, good or bad. What did you hear?

Apparently, Lee Sang Yoon is cute but not effective; Moon Geun Young's character becomes ever more illogical; it's very pretty, and it's very paint-by-numbers. I dunno. I looked into it because the pottery angle sounded cool, but then, perhaps what I'd like is a pottery documentary or something.

Is Lee Sang Yoon the one playing Gwanghae? Because if so, then he's very enjoyable as a Sageuk hero, but I would agree that he doesn't actually seem to be someone who would grow into the historical Gwanghae.

I would say that it's a VERY MBC Sageuk in that it has everything that I associate with their style of sageuks, but hasn't done anything to truly set itself apart yet or stand out. I still find it very enjoyable. My favorite characters are the heroine's childhood friends, the guy I mentioned in the post, and then her best friend who is apprenticed to a merchant. (Played by the lead actress from Soo Baek Hyang.)

Yes, adult Gwanghae. IME he's very good at certain kinds of roles but doesn't have what I'd consider a lot of range.

Hmm, that's good to know--MBC sageuks can be fun in their ahistoricity. :) Glad you're enjoying it!
