I mentioned the other day that I'm considering checking out Black Sails since most of my airing shows are ending soon. Until a few weeks ago, I knew the following about the show:

1. Pirates.

2. Lots of dudes.

3. It came out when all the non-Asian period dramas were obsessed with grim and gritty and rape all around.

4. Hannah New was in it, and she was in my favorite telenovela, El Tiempo Entra Costuras. (On netflix as The Time in Between.)

5. Honestly, I only new 1-3 because of 4.

Over the last few weeks, though, several people have been posting about it on my dash a lot, so now I also know (according to tumblr):

1. It is actually prequel fanfic for Treasure Island.

2. There is a black businesswoman named Max who is very smart, very pretty, and very gay.

3. Max and Anne Bonny are very gay for each other but Anne still thinks she's straight.

4. Max and Hannah New's character have a lot of foeyay.

5. A whole lot of people hate Hannah New's character. No idea why.

6. A very young Long John Silver is there, and he is ambiguous gay with everyone and doesn't know 8f he likes it when he starts having FEELINGS about people. I think there's another character I confuse for him in some gifsets though.

7. Not according to tumblr, but according to wikipedia, I've actually seen a lot of the cast in other things, but don't really remember them, aside from Rupert Penry-Jones. (Apparently I've seen a lot of stuff with Toby Stephens, but he only looks vaguely familiar...)

8. A MOC died recently, and no one was happy about that.

9. Aside from rape being in a couple backstories, I haven't really seen people talk about women being raped or abused, so I'm hopeful there?

10. There's a 4th lady that I know absolutely nothing about except that I think she's a little bit older than the other 3, has nice dresses, and I guess people don't hate her?

11. It might be less dude-centric than I thought, but my Internet social circles are carefully cultivated in a way that can make that hard to judge sometimes.

So, all that in mind, for those who watch it: should i? Should I not? Are you going to say yes just to get me to watch an inevitably rant about something?

I bounced off it, hard, when there was a gang-rape scene of a female character who I really liked.

So, there's that... I don't know if that ever happens again to any other character, I didn't stick around to find out.

There is also at least one canon bisexual male character who has an affair with a dude. And maybe also his wife? That part wasn't entirely clear from the vid I saw.

No, in the story there's no point where they are all three romantically involved at once.

I plan watching it at some point. Despite the period and context, it's like Vikings in that it has much less rape than Game of Thrones. I am totally up for bisexual POC.

It's a prequel to Treasure Island? That bumps it higher on my to-see list. Do you know what channel it's on? If it's a premium channel, I'll head to the library website and request DVDs.
