meganbmooreAh bliss, I am back to loving Little Fish to death again. Amazing the difference in character appreciation when the series is being approached the right way from when it's being approached the wrong way. Course, now we have palace intrigue...and...urm...generally I like palace intrigue, but as I really only care about Little Fish's part in the intrigue(which is a blast)...yeah. You know, cut this show back to 30 eps, cut out a lot of the palace intrigue and solo Little Fish stuff, and this show would be borderline perfect.
Hmm...what else before the main part?
Princess Moon: If you weren't such a psychotically evil, jealous, over-possessive control freak, mean MIGHT stop leaving you for, you know, NICE girls... And Yuyan? Seriously, you're such a manipulative wretch of a user that I'd hate you even if you weren't trying(and failing) to be the third person in a love triangle. Honey, Flower wasn't interested when he was brainwashed into thinking he didn't love Orchid and tricked into thinking she cheated on him...dressing up like her and going "isn't this enough" REALLY isn't going to get you anywhere...

Seriously, you're such a manipulative wretch of a user that I'd hate you even if you weren't trying(and failing) to be the third person in a love triangle. Honey, Flower wasn't interested when he was brainwashed into thinking he didn't love Orchid and tricked into thinking she cheated on him...dressing up like her and going "isn't this enough" REALLY isn't going to get you anywhere...
You know, I think that Little Fish and Flower's reactions and behavior after their initial grief are the perfect example of why Flower's story is more interesting. After Xian's death, Little Fish is a complete mess and all he can think about is revenge and drinking himself to death. He is, however, with Su Ying's help, eventually able to deal with it and continue with his life. In other words, he's normal. He grieves, he goes through the necessary cycle, and he's able to start moving on with his life. Does he still love Xian? Yes. And he'll probably never stop loving her, but he is capable of doing what most people who lose the one they love do and move on with his life. If they don't kill him or Su Ying off by the end, I can easily see him eventually being able to return her love and be happy.
But Flower? Without Orchid, he loses all ability to function. Even months later, he's not living so much as existing. He seeks nourishment and keeps moving because it's automatic, and the farther he moves from the capital, the farther he is from the things that cause him pain. Of course, their situations are different: Xian was a damsel in distress who couldn't be saved in time, and Little Fish was able to say goodbye to her, both before she died and in the former of a funeral. Orchid, however, sacrificed herself to save him...she was by his side when he succumbed to the coma from the poison, and when he woke, he learned that her life was the price demanded for saving his. He had no goodbyes and no body(because she's not really dead) just a note by the cliffside that she wrote in her own blood.
Without her, he has no reason to live, and when he does find reason, it's not for himself, but for others. When he realized he was probably going to die in the desert, he was happy, because it meant the pain would be over. But instead, he was rescued by Princess Taka, and when he woke up, he understood that even if his life meant nothing to him, it had mattered to her and the herdsmen who nursed him, and so he lived and helped them, and he agreed to pretend to marry Taka(incidentally, I get the "it will be a marriage in name only for a year because she can't have things anyway" but "can't have kids" and "can't have sex" aren't the same thing...I guess they just wanted to make sure we had NO doubts that he never would have agreed if there was a chance he'd eventually betray Orchid's memory) After they return to the capital and he's no longer indebted to Taka, the only reason he has to continue is his need to help Little Fish. Even though, on the surface, he seems to be doing better, he really isn't. He's still only existing, not really living, and the only reason he's able to function properly is because he has someone he has to help...first Taka because she saved him when he didn't want to be saved, and the Little Fish because he's someone who he cares about who needs him, and, of course, he happily sacrifices his life to take the poison to save Little Fish because he believes his life has no value(thank goodness Princess Star made sure whichever one Princess Moon poisoned would simultaneously get the antidote)
And then, after saying his goodbyes to Little Fish(the only one who matters) he goes to the cliff Orchid threw herself off of and throws himself off(screaming at scene even though she was already spoiled for it? Possibly.) Only to survive and, at the bottom, find that Orchid ISN'T dead...she was saved and hidden by Princess Star so that she'd be safe until after the baby was born. Yes, there was more screaming before reunion.
Incidentally, before pics, I have to say that I really liked Taka...she loved Flower, but she knew that he'd never love her in return and she was never bitter about that or demanded more...all she asked and expected was that he keep his word and help her people, and when he stays in the capital, it's because she's convinced him that he's fulfilled his debt to her and that he's needed more there.

Oh MAN. I knew I was doing something wrong went I went through most of college without a bf. If I only did that, I would have found my Mr. Right much sooner!
And yeah, angstily disfunctional wins over nicely normal every day.
P.S.I started watching on crunchyroll. I hate watching on crunchyroll. But I cannot wait for DVDs. I blame you :)

Date: 2007-05-18 04:41 am (UTC)And Yuyan...ugh...you know how I often like the other girl in doramas? Not here. She is one of the few I truly despise. I mean, in comparison, Yukari in Kurosagi got the hint the first episode. And that stunt...ugh...that was just...evil.

Yuyan likes to do things like frame men for attempted rape, help frame the guy she supposedly cares for for murder, try to kill her comatose romantic rival, masquerade as her romantic rival, murder relatives, fake pregnancies, etc. Yukari was just in need of a serious reality check.
