BBC's North & South(well, it started that way)

Not the proper post, as I'm only 1/2 way through this, but wow, I'm not sure what was handled worse there(by the characters)  the marriage proposal or the rejection.  Ouch.

Almost makes Mr. Darcy's proposal in the recent Pride and Prejudice look like the smoothest, best spoken thing ever.

(yeah, I had to stop watching Battlestar Galactica for a bit.  I can only get whacked over the head by the TENSION and the DRAMA and the DANGER and the ANGST so much before needing a break...though it is good, so it's a break instead of quitting...the break, given my binge tendencies, is rather significant, though)

Also, I was just very, very bad and ordered a bunch of manga.

God yes, that has to be the most horrible marriage proposal scene I've ever seen. Really horrific to watch all round.

But I do love North and South. Mr Thorton and Margaret Hale were so amazing that I wish the actors would appear in more.

Aye, watching it is like "oh my lord...is it humanly possible for you to have put that in any worse...wow...and it was taken even worse..."

But it's extremely good and they do a very good job of making you see both sides, and agree with both.

Somehow Margaret's rejection is more of an "ouch" situation that Elizabeth's ever was. Maybe because Elizabeth keeps some delicacy to the situation while Margaret just shoots Thornton down without thinking twice. It was an admittedly stupid idea on Thornton's part but DANG. He really must have loved her to still pursue after that debacle.

elizabeth struggles very, very hard to maintain her composure and just barely succeeds...margaret just unloads her instinctive reaction on him.

watching it(and them after, now) i'm all "how on earth can this ever possibly work out?"
