No, seriously.
Up to ep 14 and...uhm...yeah...
So, Yung's family unknowingly performed a service for the Emperor of Heaven and as payment, he fixed it so that they'd always have gold-to give to charity, spend lavishly, squirrel away, etc-and if the gold was ever stolen, it would turn to dirt and draw bugs or some such. The corrupt local magistrate and corrupt rich merchant learn about this, so the magistrate frames Yung's parent's for murder and tells Yung that he'll free them if Yung gives him all their gold. Yung does, but since he was forced to give it up, it reverts. So the magistrate has Yung arrested and the merchant goes to his parents and says that if they give him all their property(and oh yes, Yung is being tortured in jail during all this and getting all beat up and bloody wearing white clothes) and become his servants, he'll get the magistrate to drop the charges, and the parents agree.
Meanwhile, Hao Qi(still my fave character) is in the capital in a competition to become a high ranking official, and everyone is counting on him to win and come back and fix things(ok, mostly Sai Gin, but she has secondary OTP faith power backing her.) In the capital, Hao Qi learns from the emperor's brother(EB from now on) that Yung threw the match that chose which of them would go to the capital, and he's ordered to lose the competition and settle for a smaller honor because EB wants the son of a high ranking family to win so that the family will be indebted to him. However, between running into the warrior he and Yung defeated before(which is what brought him to EB's attention) and learning about what was happening to Yung, he won the match instead of sacrificing his principles. Of course, this pissed EB off, and he framed Hao Qi for attacking the princess, resulting in being blacklisted from ever being an official and kicked out of the palace(and oh yes, he was also tortured and beaten and got all bloody while wearing solid white, too)
So, yeah, if there were puppies, they would have been trampled to add to the angst.
That said, watching Hao Qi's fight scenes makes me really want to see Sword Stained With Royal Blood, where Bobby Dou plays the lead.

Date: 2007-07-05 08:17 am (UTC)I've had that reaction to various things. On the one hand, you're nooooo! not more pain for the hero! But then sometimes they suffer so attractively that you're ready for them to pile it on. I am not sure what that says about me and I am not about to reflect on it.
