The number of people on my flist and IMs who are not only willing to kill, but have murder weapons and methods picked out should there be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows spoilers outside of cuts is...well...SCARY!!!

And I think half my flist is vowing to go no internet-no news-no human interaction from the second the book comes out until they finish it...

It's so tempting to go "I READ IT! HARRY DIES!" just out of pure evilness and malice, except:

A) I'm not that malicious
B) I kinda like being liked and having people speak to me
C) I believe the death threats
D) I think most of my flist who reads the books knows that I don't(yet)
E) I'm announcing my dastardly plan here, so actually doing it would  be rather pointless

(then there's the fact that actually doing such things indicates disdain for the fandom in general, which is not the case...though it does scare me)

Mmmm...yes...this is a pointless post from one watching everyone around her go psycho over it who's left just kinda going "uhm...ok..."

The real question is:  Will reading my flist take half as long or twice as long next week?

note: any spoiling, copyright infringements, links to scans, etc. in comments by spammers or anyone else are going to be deleted.  Just because I'm not reading it doesn't mean I'm letting anyone else ruin the experience for my flist for their own fun.  This wasn't posted for 5 minutes before there was a comment like that.

The fandom scare me too. I keep to myself, in the back corner. Much like I do with the Kat-Tun fandom.

I think I'm scared by most fandoms. I think I may be scared of JE fandom a bit more. I like Harry Potter but I'm not die hard fan so I'm definitely going "umm okay" with you. :) I'm not planning on staying away from people or the internet because of spoilers. Even if Harry dies it makes sense..

based on the movies and what i've read, HP is largely an all ages mix of neil gaiman's books of magic and arthurian mythos...and we all know how that turned out...

and yes, most fandoms are scaray...its just that the HP fandom is on a double-high right now.

Yeah, fans should just realize that and calm down. I think we are 4 days away now so can only expect it to get even crazier...*hides*

I can't believe you got a spam post already! Those people are really fast!

i expect it to last at least a month, though the worst will be the next week and a half. i'd adopt a "let them enjoy it and read my own book" attitude were it not for the fact that so many(largely in rl, not lj as much) seem to think there's something wrong with me because i read so much but dont read HP.

That's true it could really last a while seeing it's the last book and there will be 2 more films to come. LOL, i honestly don't think there's something wrong with you. I guess since I used to be anti-harry potter so I know the feeling when everyone gangs up on you. All my friends in high school were always pestering me about it and i just thought it wasn't my kind of thing. It wasn't until i saw the first movie in Spanish class and that I got into it. At that time all 4 books were out and I've been reading it for enjoyment ever since. I'm really bad at trivia and things since I just read it for fun. Honestly, the books have really died in quality. It pretty much hasn't been that good since the 4th book.

*cough* I'm so getting stoned by hardcore potter fans XD

honestly, i'm not remotely anti-harry potter, i just haven't read them(main reasons being insane hype, being able to see what its based on a little too well, and reading an interview where the author said she didn't know she was writing a fantasy until the book was done and someone told her thats what it was...i mean, if the troll showing up and whisking the kid off to wizard school wasnt enough of a clue...)

Isn't it fun the things we watch in school sometimes?

don't worry, the HP fans on my flist are of the sane variety.

LOL, that's hilarious. I haven't really read any of her interviews(another sign i'm bad potter fan^^).

I love most the things they show in school. They tend to be pretty interesting or downright hilarious. Either way it provides entertainment. :P I still don't know why Harry Potter dubbed in Spanish really helped the class learn any Spanish. I'm still wondering how i got into it when i barely understood any dialog..XD

Phew, I'm glad. :)

I haven't talked to you in very long time I think. *waves* I think I haven't talked to you since you got me into watching Hwang Jin Yi. I still need to see Damo.

HP dubbed in spanish sounds much more pertinent to the course than most of the things we watched in my classes(Austen Powers in business math...gotta love what coaches in Texas get away with...were it not for the fact that Austen Powers makes me twitch like nothing this side of Pee Wee Herman and Barney)

Hmm...yeah, it has been quite a while...I've been rather cdrama obsessed lately...

You should watch Damo. What did you think of Hwang Jin Yi?

LOL, Austin Power in business math is sure strange. :P

I've noticed. I think my hkdrama(well more like tvb) phase as ended for me. I grew up on that stuff and became very obessed when i was in high school but ever since all my favorite people left I haven't gotten into it like i used to. J/K dramas have really kidnapped me. :P

Hwang Jin Yi was very pretty and sad. I remember crying quite a bit. :( I enjoyed it very much though. I'm looking forward to seeing the film with Song Hye Kyo too. Thank you for your rec. :)

well, i've only been watching dramas for about a year now, so there hasn't been enough time for me to outgrow any kind.

Part of why I like Hwang Jin Yi is that it's not so much angsty as it is sad and tragic because her life is so hopeless. Her greatest love is her art, but in being able to pursue it, she lost all hope of ever having happiness as a woman, which she realized more and more as her life progressed. There is some happiness, though, as, historically, while the official she ran away with was her greatest love, the bodyguard later became an official himself(we last see him as he's about to do this) and became her protector and stayed with her for the rest of her life, so she was finally able to be with a man who was able to both love her and her art and not have it be a conflict for him(and actually, bodyguard may have been my favorite character...)

I'm very much looking forward to the movie...I think it has a completely different approach to the character.

I love Harry Potter but the fandom is batshit in ways that makes me back away slowly. I actually started reading the books before they became so insanely popular -- maybe right before Prisoner of Azkaban came -- so I actually endured a lot of ridicule for being a college student reading a bunch of kids' books.

(I got the last laugh in the end though because all the people who ridiculed me ended up reading the books themselves by the next summer.)

Ah, if only something I get laughed at for reading would become insanely popular...

(though, in some ways, often liking the lesser-known stuff the best saves you from getting caught up in insane fandoms...)

Unfortunately, it's only ever happened to Harry Potter, I think.

(though, in some ways, often liking the lesser-known stuff the best saves you from getting caught up in insane fandoms...)

This is true.

I'm planning to make posts going "OMG [character name]" and nothing more. This will mean they either do something incredibly awesome or die. Possibly both.

Date: 2007-07-17 03:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
i'd say probably both

All I'm saying is, I won't be distinguishing between the two.

Partially because I'm getting it at midnight and will be living on coffee until I finish.

The fun thing is I actually do know what will happen :b But I won't spoil it 'cause I value living too much.

I haven't even ordered the book yet ... I guess I'll go do that. I want to order some more Blade of the Immortal anyway!

(I'm much more excited about vol. 24 SDK and the far-off vol. 8 Saiyuki Reload ... not to mention the sequel to Cyteen that CJ Cherryh is writing right now.)

Spoiling a book for fans is just cruel, like making a little kid cry on purpose. But on the other hand, some of the HP fans need to get a life.

even though I get the monthly issues, I still need to order the latest BotI trade, myself. What volume are you up to, now?

And ditto on pretty much everything said.

Considering that I will be reading the book for the first half of next week, and then that would immediately be followed by Comic-Con, I will be happy to say that I will miss the whole internet fandom phenomenon with regards to Mr. Potter.

Of course, by going to Comic-Con, I may very well be at the epicenter of this fandom phenomenon, but at least I won't have to read about it ad nauseum (sp?) online.
