Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I do everything in my power to keep the spines uncracked.  Even if it's a used book with a cracked spine, I try to keep it from getting more cracked.

Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I uses anything that can function as a bookmark, as long as it's not something I may need and wonder what I did with it(I tend to lose them)

Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
Nnnnnnooooooooooo.....I didn't even write on school books...if it's something where I'll need to come back ro reference it, I use those little postit tags.  My brother once borrowed my Bible for a few weeks (years ago) and when he gave it back it was all highlighted and written on...I went nuts on him and he told me that it's what you were supposed to do with a Bible.

Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
T...t...toss....nnnnnooooo.  Even if I hate it and could never make past page 50, I don't toss it.  Though I am clumsy and have dropped books before, and my purse is large-ish so that I can always have whatever book I'm reading in it, unless it's a large hardcover, in which case, there's a manga there.

Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Only if it's a used book and the spine is already cracked enough that that'll have no effect on it.  But I always try to avoid those when getting used books, anyway.

Um--water? Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
My books do not go near the water.

Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
Bookshelves, stacked whatever way they have to be to safely get the most in.

Do you make a distinction--as regards book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Nope, no distinction.  They both cost money and both are to be taken care of.

I agree with you on all of those.
I tried reading a book while having a bubble bath once but it wasn't worth the effort because I was too worried about keeping the book dry to relax.

I did that some in HS, but had the same problem.
