Supernatural 2.6: A Dean/Jo picspam

You know what? I have decided that I am cursed, CURSED I say, when it comes to Jensen Ackles and shipping. Dark Angel? I started shipping Alec/Asha in the first ep of season 2 where he took her gun and went "nice..." *long glance* "...gun" and then left while she stood there with a "what just happened?" look on her face, then I was absolutely GIDDY when it looked like they might happen midseason and then she just kinda...vanished. I guess maybe the Max/Logan shippers hated her? (Well...I'm a Max/Logan shipper too, but it's not like Asha was ever really a threat or anything...) Smallville? Lana's boyfriend. Meaning not only could I NOT ship, but that it had to go badly for him no matter what. And now there's Dean/Jo in Supernatural, and I don't get to keep Jo because heaven forbid either perfectly straight, healthy, 20-something brother actually be interested in a guy...it gets in the way of the non-existant slash and cannot be allowed.
BAH!
Seriously, how do you not love her? She's so cute and fun(outside and inside)

Pretending to be boyfriend and girlfriend:

I love Sammy just playing with his gun in the background while they fight.

And Sammy wisely trying to disappear into the woodwork when Ellen is on the phone asking where Jo is(I love the boys' fear of Ellen)

Jo keeps Dean on his feet:

Except for when she tells him to sit down

Great courtship rituals: monster hunting in small, dark places:

I guess it does have its benefits...

I love Dean's "I have no idea what to do with you but whatever I decide, your mother will kill me over" face.

Aww...she found her first spirit...such a happy day for an aspiring hunter.

Yes Jo, hold the flashlight very, very close to give Dean as much light as possible.

Winning a girl's heart, Winchester style: giving her a bigger knife.

You know what? I don't mind that Jo needed rescueing, because this is her first hunt. And, as much as my shippy heart would have loved a hug or something in the rescue, I'm glad he just asked if she was ok and then got down to business, because he was treating her like a fellow hunter like she wanted, and it means he respects her, even if he didn't want to have her there and in danger(which also put him in the line of fire with Ellen)

Aww...she looked so sad in the last scene...

Even though she tried to hide it.

Dean does not like a sad Jo.

I feel that Dean is just as sad as I am that we don't get to keep Jo:

I shall now go watch more.

Date: 2007-09-21 06:31 am (UTC)I like Jo too and I think "No Exit" is a great episode. Although, even in that episode, I didn't see any reason they would necessarily hook up... Dean is *really* scared of Ellen. LOL! I'm a slashy little fangirl, but like any good slashy little fangirl, I'm a master at denying and ignoring parts of canon that I don't want to acknowledge all in pursuit of whatever pairing's subtext I've latched onto. I'm kinda disappointed that TPTB have been non-committal about her returning anytime in the near future...
Re: lol
Date: 2007-09-21 06:52 am (UTC)The thing is...I don't like Jo because she's Dean's love interest. If Alona Tal and Jensen Ackles didn't have good chemistry, I wouldn't ship them at all. I'd love Jo if they were playing it as a brother/sister thing, or if she were just a one time guest star(I shall be eternally bitter about not getting to keep Antique Girl from season 1...she was fun, smart, and useful in a rather unique way) Jo is cute, fun, smart, spunky and energetic, without being rabid, annoying or cloying as such characters often end up being.
Frankly, if Dean were to EVER settle down, he would have with Cassie in S1...Sam's the one who may settle down someday. The best Dean will ever have is someone he can be friends and partners with, and maybe more when/if things are calm.
I also love Ellen, and the boys's fear of her(Sam has it, too...) I really think TPTB screwed up by announcing up front that Jo would be a potential love interest for Dean, esp. as they were obviously taking it very, very slow(as best suits the show and character) and just introduced her as a supporting character, and then brought it up once the fans were used to her. I'm hoping that TPTB being non-committal about her being back means that she WILL be back, but they want it to be a surprise. Maybe one of those surprise appearances the last 5 seconds before the midseason break and then actually announced for episodes after...
Re: lol
Date: 2007-09-21 07:29 am (UTC)And I agree with you that TPTB *totally* screwed up announcing that Jo was to be a love interest from the get go... Even hinting at such a thing with some of the people in this fandom is suicidal. I've never seen such a rabid reaction to such rumors. Lucky me, I ignore spoilers, so I had no idea about all that fan-kerfuffle until sometime after I saw "No Exit." I was absolutely devestated to find out that some fans had been mean about not only Jo, but also Alona Tal on some forums, and Alona saw their comments and was quite upset by them. If I ever meet Alona Tal, I will just have to apologize on behalf of fandom at large for the actions of some very rude people because, really, I was *horrified.*
Well, TPTB have said that Ellen will be back because, from what I understand, they said at some point this summer that she wouldn't be back and the fans that they listen to (whoever they are) made noise about wanting Ellen to be back, so now she will be. And TPTB just haven't mentioned Jo at all, as to whether she'll be back or not. I take that as being non-committal. So I think there must be some hope for Jo! I want there to be hope for Jo! Surely, given what happened in AHBLpt1&pt2 with Ellen and the Roadhouse, Jo's got to come back, in the middle of a "not under my roof, you won't" stand-off with her mother or not.
Re: lol
Date: 2007-09-21 07:50 am (UTC)With Sarah, she could have been a useful character in a way that female characters usually aren't in that she could be a font of information, and she could provide a feel of a solid supporting role by doing no more than what Ellen did is 2.3...being someone to occassionally call for info. Besides, you know Dean would always have a field day with it.
I am sometimes a spoiler hound and sometimes spoiler phobic. I became interested in Supernatural around the time the Jo rumors hit, though, so I heard about it and wondered if I was about to get involved in a completely insane fandom. I heard that "every supernatural fan" hated her, but all the ones on my f-list who mentioned her either liked or didn't mind her, and they're the ones I listen to.
And people should NEVER take out their dislike of a character on an actor. I'm very glad that Ellen is coming back(no clue about the events you're referring to, though...only seen through ep 2.8 as of about 15 minutes ago) both because I like Ellen a lot and because it leaves room for Jo coming back.
BTW, I see you're a fan of Magnificent 7(aka, the thing that made me like westerns.) I think that fandom (one of the first ones I was ever involved with) was my first exposure to rabid hatred of female characters primarily for existing in canon and having the potential of being canon slash interferers.
Re: lol
Date: 2007-09-21 08:53 am (UTC)Yeah, Sarah had potential, but for whatever reason they had TPTB just didn't want to take advantage... which confused me 'cause it *did* look like they were setting things up at the end of "Provenance." I completely expected to see her come back at some point.
Oh, I am so sorry for spoiling things down the road! I completely assumed that you'd seen all of Season 2! OMG! Not another word about it from me. I hate it when people do that to me, so, I'm just so sorry...
I *am* a Mag 7 fan. ;D That was one under-rated show for the late-90s, I tell you. I watched it when I was much younger and I've only recently gotten back into it. I'm not terribly fond of Mary or Casey (although, Mary got better toward the end of the series' run), but not because they interfered with slash (if you know how to twist things, they can actually help the subtext along). Casey just generally annoyed me as a person, although she did have her moments sometimes. And with Mary, it's mostly costumes and her attitude being about 20 years later than everyone else's for nearly the entire first season that soured me on her.
Re: lol
Date: 2007-09-21 03:39 pm (UTC)And don't worry, I'm always so behind that I don't worry about people accidentally spoiling me(and sometimes I'm a spoiler hound)
Mag7 is EXTREMELY underrated. Casey I'm neutral on...I like her and think her puppy love with JD was cute, but didn't miss her when she wasn't around. Ditto for Inez-she was fun, but I didn't notice as much when she wasn't there. I loved Mary from the start, though, largely because she DID have the mindset of a woman of her times. After all, she was an eastern woman-a well bred one at that-and had the upbringing and prejudices of that. One thing I've always found interesting about the fans is that they hold Mary's behavior in working girls against her, but not Ezra's racism in the pilot against him. In both cases, the point wasn't that they were prejudices, but that they had prejudices that people of their time and upbringing would have, but both were able to look past those and change and grow when given the chance. Working Girls was my first ep, ands the fact that they let one of their main characters have such an unattractive bias but grow from it is part of what made me fall for the show.
Re: lol
Date: 2007-09-21 06:36 pm (UTC)Inez was great! I nearly lost it over the scenes with the love-potion in "Chinatown."
I liked Mary better in the second season. She seemed more real then and less of a caricature. You have a good point about her background. Still, her costumes in the first season were all 1890s, except for 2 dresses and I think an apron that were appropriately 1870s, and that drives me a little crazy, especially when everyone else's costumes are pretty consistently early-1870s. I guess, since as soon as I see her in all the early episodes I'm thinking "wrong, wrong, wrong," it's hard for me to see any good points when I'm already annoyed. But, ah well... I don't hate her...
Re: lol
Date: 2007-09-21 01:05 pm (UTC)the diaries are linked from jo's page at the SuperWiki. but you probably found those by now, hmm?
Re: lol
Date: 2007-09-21 12:56 pm (UTC)According to the SuperWiki (http://www.supernatural.oscillating.net/index.php?title=Main_Page ), Jo was 22 this year, which would have made her 20 to Dean’s then 27 in the epis where she appears in S2. Her page is here:

You can double check my math, not my strong suit. My hubby & I have the exact same age difference, so I don't object to that.
I do like her as a regular on the show, and yes, I agree they have good chemistry –-but not *that* kind of chemistry. I just didn't feel it --to me it was more like a brotherly/sisterly respect sort of thing. I just think Dean would be happier with someone a little less hard-edged as himself --someone like Layla, who allows him to explore his hidden, angsty spiritual side like he could never do with Sammy or anyone else. But that’s just IMHO - and why I wrote a fic about that!
Interesting discussion - thanks!!
Love, S.

Date: 2007-09-21 06:53 am (UTC)And Ashley Scott left the OTP of Asha/Alec to go be Huntress on the horrible, horrible "Birds of Prey" series. But, really, if "Dark Angel" has used her more wisely, she might not have left. Which probably wouldn't have saved us from the crappiness of BOP TV series, but still.
I miss Alec/Asha. :(

Date: 2007-09-21 07:05 am (UTC)The problem I had with S2 was that there was too much "mutant of the week" stuff and by the time they were through with that, they didn't have much room for anything but Max/Logan. I also think getting rid of Lydecker so early and ambiguously was a very bad mistake.
I never saw the BoP series but kinda want to, as I really like Ashley Scott and Dina Meyer, but haven't seen either in much.
