I have started watching (for the first time...I know I know) Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai.  For some reason, I find Toshiro Mifune's running around(I think he almost skipped at one point) with his hand wrapped around the bottom of his sword sheath oddly endearing.  I have to wonder, though, how practical that is and if it was common practice.  I mean, it LOOKS odd(but strangely cute) with the entire sword sticking out over his shoulder, but it's a rather long sword, and the hilt is a good 3 to 4 feet out of reach...

I also have to wonder if I'll ever see him in anything where he isn't covered in layers of dirt and sweat...I mostly recognize him from role to role by mannerisms more than appearance.  Maybe in Throne of Blood.  That's based on MacBeth, and surely if it follows the plot at all, he has to bathe at SOME point after murdering his political rival/enemy and becoming lord...

ETA:  Why, exactly, does a Criterion Collection edition DVD have "Please! I have fever to ask!" in the subs...

I don't know how far you got into Seven Samurai, but Toshiro's character really isn't about practical... :b

He actually did a large number of modern and/or dramatic roles, it's just they never really made it across the pond to us (generally for good reason...) You could check him out in the TV miniseries for "Shogun" (which is quite good, better than the book).

"Throne of Blood" he does spend most of it in lordly attire, and is an all-around great adaptation of Macbeth, so why you haven't seen it yet is a mystery to me :b

I got about 35 minutes into Seven Samurai before bed called, but I had rather figured that out.

Hey now, I only started watching Kurosawa movies earlier this year. Besides, last I checked, you hadn't seen ToB yet...

...and you were nagging me about not owning any Miyazaki films?

(I developed a terrible crush in Toshiro Mifune in high school after watching him in Seven Samurai, Sanjuro, Yojimbo... I realize, of course, that was several decades too late and a hemisphere away but screen crushes know no reason.)

Heh. I only discovered Kurosawa earlier this year. As this is my 4th movie(Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Rashomon I've seen) I think I'm doing fairly well. It's not like criterion DVDs get discounted to $6-$12 like most dvds do...

There is absolutely no reason to allow hemisphere and decades to interfere with crushes.

Do you like it? For some reason I remember you being a fan of "Magnificent seven" (which is really a re-make of "Seven Samurai").

So far so good. And yeah, I like the Magnificent Seven movie, and loved the TV show.
