more Samurai Seven

Random bits:

1. It is about guys with swords. Accompanied by good plot and characterization.
2. There is mecha. I'm not a big fan of mecha in general, but this mecha exists so that guys with swords can chop it into little bits. I find this to be good mecha.
3. Also on mecha, I usually think it's kinda ugly. This mecha is actually pretty cool looking.
4. It has awesome music.
5. And awesome fight scenes.
6. And it takes a classic samurai tale and dumps it into a scifi setting and makes it work. I find this the most pertinent part.

  

My three favorites. My favorite is just whichever of the three is on my screen at the time. It's easier that way.



Kambei. Main character by virtue of being the leader. Brave, strong, heroic, awesome fighter, kicks butt better than everyone else, etc. Apparently always chose the losing side in battles before so now he's a touch on the silent, bitter and angsty side. Can't seem to resist taking in stray priestesses and would-be samurais, though.



Kyuzo. Silent, deadly, basically lives to fight. Protects people in his own special way. Starts out working for the bad guys but switches sides because...well, really just because he wants to fight Kambei to the death but Kambei refuses to fight him until after he helps the village and Kyuzo wants to kill him in a fair fight(it's a samurai thing...it's how they show friendship...) He actually makes me think somewhat of a less grabby Onime no Kyo.



Kikuchiyo. Big dumb lunk with a big heart who traded in his body for a robotic one. Claims to be a samurai but really wasn't. Steals every scene he's in.

Then there's:



Gorobe. A samurai turned street performer. Very fun, energetic guy who's always up for a good laugh but can and will turn and slice your head off mid-laugh. Seems to have a bit of a fetish for blood. I love him muchly. Not for the fetish part, though.



Katsishiro. "The kid." Young guy who wants to be a hero. Hero worships Kambei, wishes no one noticed his blatant crushing on Kirara. Sweet boy, just kinda dull in comparson to the rest.



Kirara. Village priestess who goes to town to gather the samurai. Object of Katsushiro's affections. I suspect, though, that her eyes are on Kambei. I kinda wish, though, that Kyozu/Kirara had a chance...in their few scenes together, they are Just. My. Thing. Doubt it'll happen though. Ah well. Like Katsushiro, I like her, but she isn't as interesting as the other characters.



Heihachi. Nice guy who'd rather eat, chop wood or invent than fight. Still quite good with the sword though, naturally. He has eyes but you rarely see them. I also love him muchly.



Rikichi. Villager who goes with Kirara and Komatsu to gather the samurai. Nice guy, rather fun. Has some issues from when he didn't stop his wife from going with the bandits so they'd spare the villagers. Kambei promised to get her back, though.



Shichiroji. Kambei's older partner who's been living in a brothel with his girlfriend since she fished him out of the river after his last battle. You can't really blame him for staying put. Joins up after Kambei and the others come to him to hide out. He kicks butt. If he does not live and go back to his girlfriend. I shall be displeased(guys who leave their girl swearing to be back soon either die while having visions of going back to them or being forgiven for not making it back and make me want to cry or they make it back 30 seconds before the end credits roll.)



Ukyo. Creepy son of the local magistrate in the town where they all meet. Ickily obsessed with getting Kirara in bed. I hope unpleasant things happen to him. I maintain he and Katsushiro look alike.

And finally:



Komachi. Kirara's little sister. Kikuchiyo's Number One Fan and a blessedly unannoying anime/manga kid(relatively speaking)

Komachi and Kikuchiyo, for the most part, are one of the most adorable things in the series! Though there is something he says, way late in the series, that made me and another person who was watching it at the same time say, "Uh... what did you just say? Can you take that back because I think I just got squicked?" But otherwise, adorable!

They are, indeed, very adorable. I shall preemptively assume that whatever he says is just his stupidity taking over his brain.

Oh Kikuchiyo, you steal the show just like Toshiro Mifune did.

He does an extremely good job of living up to Toshiro Mifune, which isn''t easy.

I'm currently kinda sad that I seem to currently be shipping something that doesn't have a chance.

I usually manage to avoid doing it, though. Unless I just don't care about a canon 'ship and I really, really like another character and they have interactions that hit my shipping kinks(and he just reminds me so much of Kyo...)
