On the stoopid people front:
While I was waiting for my chinese takeout to be ready, a woman who had called in her order came in. It went like this:
Customer: I had a once choice that I called in.
*Manager looks at called in orders*
Manager: "The almond chicken?"
Customer *getting utensils*: "Uh huh."
Manager: "It'll be $3.79."
Customer: "What? No, that's wrong. The one choice with the order of fried rice."
*Manager looks at orders again.*
Manager: "The one choice beef and broccoli and the chicken fried rice with wonton soup?"
inserts that the *insert meat* fried rice comes with soup or an eggroll, and that unles you specify a soup, they automatically give you an eggroll, so for wonton soup to be mentioned, it would have had to be asked for
*Customer gives me and the other lady an annoyed "these people..." look*
Customer: "No JUST the one choice and the fried rice."
Manager: "Sorry, it's *forgot amount but you get the point..*"
*Customer gives exasperated sigh and pays and tries to look at us again but we suddenly find the menu utterly fascinating despite both being regular customers and having already ordered.*

On the Manga front:
Anyone read Kekkaishi? i've been pondering this one for a while, but I haven't ever really heard much back on it. I seem to primarily be in a shonen action mood these days(probably because I seem to have already found most of the decent shojo that doesn't degenerate into "oh no, does the super popular boy I like really like me and oh, should we have sex yet...I'm just not sure...he wants to, but oh oh oh..." after a few volumes...those can be good, but most of them lose me the econd that starts up, because I stopped being of the variety who worries about being 16 and should I have underaged sex about...oh...10 years ago...) Any opinions on the series?
I also snagged Vol 3 of Vampire Knight(if I wasn't so disturbed by the idea of someone like Kaname supposed to be part of a love triangle in a positive way, that would probably be one of my favorite books right now) and the first volume of xXxHolic while I was out(along with Liz Maverick's Wired.) I actually read the first volume of xXxHolic a while back, but at the time I had already read the first few volumes of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles, and I think 2 series of endless AU was too much for me then, so I thought I'd try it out again since I haven't read Tsubasa in a long time. (Sadly, after a bit Tsubasa seemed to become little more than "look at all these different versions of every character we've ever had" and I lost interest.)
Also, while reading vol 23-24 of Samurai Deeper Kyo last night, something kept triking me as odd the whole time, but I couldn't figure out what. But I have realized: Yuya stayed fully clothed the entire time. Probably because Kyo wasn't around much. Now, if we could jut find a way to keep Yuya clothed AND Kyo around...(note that part of this is not required should they be all nice and alone in a cabin in the wood or some such...)

On the Addicting Things the F-list Gets Me Into front:
I have been playing with
telophase's Cool Bits Story Generator and keep seeing things I either have read/watched or would read/watch in an anime or manga...or wuxia. Observe:
It starts in a shadowy forest, with an assassin. The antagonist is a misanthropic loner and not motivated out of boredom, and the plot involves elements like inept crooks and wit.
The story begins in the space behind a waterfall, when a person who is not evil but misunderstood and a person who lives on the edge of society meet because of going down in non-literal flames together. It involves uncomfortable but real faith. The protagonist is motivated because that's what a scientist does.
Your story begins with a telepath in a ruined cathedral. The antagonist is a fighter wearing impractical clothing who fights easily anyway who is motivated by jealousy. Plot elements include a frantic message and gratuitous nudity.
It starts in a stark and empty desert, with a martyr. The antagonist is an angry girl in a very short skirt and motivated because all the streams flow in that direction, and the plot involves elements like thwarted evil and aerodynamic martial arts fighting.
The story is a supernatural mystery. Romance blossoms between a sassy serf and a clairvoyant, while difficulties they encounter include gratuitous nudity and an illicit relationship and someone who is motivated because they've always wanted to open a really good restaurant.
The text starts as a darkly Byronic anti-hero encounters mind games and seduction while in the Gilded Age. The overall narrative features nostalgia for a past that never was and the motivation behind the major plot events is: because it makes them giggle madly.
It starts in a castle on the Rhine, with a fallen angel. The antagonist is a person torn between two paths and the plot involves elements like lost knowledge and a sense of time passing.
It starts in a city of wonder, with a mutant. The antagonist is a sympathetic antihero and not motivated to save a loved one, and the plot involves elements like religious hypocrisy and veils.
It starts in an ancient house with magic in its very walls, with an older man. The antagonist is a commanding officer and not motivated because that's the kind of person they want to be, and the plot involves elements like sex in desperate and inappropriate situations and insane weapons that seem impossible to wield.
The story begins with resisting fate, and ends with a grand romantic gesture that's a little foolish. It features a fighter pilot and a ridiculously stupid or lucky protagonist, but the overall narrative is a cyclical story
The story takes place on the edge of evil. Romance blossoms between a tough woman in a dangerous situation and a psychopath, while difficulties they encounter include war and an illicit relationship.
This story is about what happens when a misunderstood loner, who is motivated because they burned all their bridges back home (as one does), and a lady who is not what she seems, who is motivated because of an addiction (as one does), meet in a souk. A key element of the conflict is the sound of rain on leaves.
In Heian Japan, a monk encounters secrets within secrets as the story begins. As the narrative unfolds, the protagonist meets a deaf person with a multicolored hairstyle, and they wind up in an asylum with sex somewhere that might be overheard.
It begins with a baron in a castle on the Rhine. This person meets someone who lives in the moment and together they encounter innocence and cold bottled drinks on the beach. The story winds up in a city street at night full of different people and languages and features bare feet on earth. The overall narrative concerns not fitting in.
The antagonist of this piece is a sympathetic antihero, while the protagonist is a psychopath. Neither of them are motivated because they burned all their bridges back home. The plot begins with learning how to be human in a sepulchre. The ending includes elements of panthers and war.
The story begins in turn-of-the-century Europe, when a martyr and a hidden heir who doesn’t know they're the heir meet because of dragons. It is about the moments before an era fades away. The protagonist is not motivated to get attention.
It starts in a sleeper car in a train, with a changeling. The antagonist is a coward who finds courage and the plot involves elements like a duel of wits and swords and a double entendre.
This story begins as it ends, with a damaged warrior. In a large city, a hidden heir who doesn’t know they're the heir and a quiet, angsty shapeshifting boy struggle against the odds and encounter panthers, a fight in a stairwell, and a fallen angel who is motivated because they love the smell of napalm in the morning. The text contains the non-human as genuinely strange and incomprehensible.
This story begins as it ends, with a fool who is not as foolish as others believe. In a nightclub in an old cathedral, an angel and a spunky trainee detective struggle against the odds and encounter poison, learning about living and being alive together, and someone who appreciates life's small things who is motivated because they are under a curse that forces their actions. The text is about transformation.
This story is about what happens when a coward who finds courage, who is motivated out of loyalty to a commanding officer (as one does), and a woman with a gun, who is motivated because though they know they'll never be the best or even all that good, they still love the art and want to try (as one does), meet in neon-lit streets. A key element of the conflict is sacrificing everything to save the world.
Your story begins with a man in black in an abandoned monastery. The villain is a tall man in a dark Armani suit who has a scar. Plot elements include a stolen kiss and a married couple whose relationship is not static, boring, or crumbling.
Your story begins with a werebeast in a library. The villain is someone who appreciates life's small things who has a collar. Plot elements include a broken taboo and dangerous fantasy creatures.
Oddly, the one thing in there that made me do "I'd think twice" was the sex bit...apparently Love Hina and Samurai Deeper Kyo(among others) have hardened me to gratiutou nudity...at least when it comes to manga.

ETA: Also? The icon making mood can eat you alive. That is all. (the world cannot possibly need this many Saiyuki icons)

Date: 2007-11-01 12:08 am (UTC)Kyo, on the other hand, is probably rather disappointed in the lack of fanservice in general in the last several volumes. (Akari being felt up by Mibu flunkies doesn't count!)
I'm disappointed in the almost complete lack of Yukimura. But I understand that will be remedied with some really fantastic Yukimura highlighting a couple of volumes in the future.
(I'm resisting the upgraded Cool Bits Generator. I want to answer all the flist stuff and all the kind comments on my LJ first.)

Still, hopefully xXxHolic will stick this time.
