 I have started reading Martha Wells's The Element of Fire, and I have to say that the commander of the guards leading a cat burglar style raid to invade a sorcerer's mansion to save another sorcerer is ALMOST as good as an opening as an assassin-turned-courtier scalling the palace walls out of boredom and then almost falling to his death when his fiancee investigated why the window was opening.

I love Martha Wells, but Element of Fire was her first book, and IMO, it shows. Still, she's one of those authors whose bad books are still infinitely better than most of these hacks' best books ... !

I wish more people read her - btw, she's on LJ.

I noted it was her first book when I got it(only one I found at the local UBSes) and am approaching it as such.
