Somewhere between the end of season 1 and here, Lina and Gourry split up with Zelgadis and Amelia.  Amelia's father, proving that he does not have a properly functioning brain, sends Amelia to a neighboring country who is amassing an army to tell them to knock it off.  Neighboring country is led by a wussy king who wants to  conquer the world, and his evil primadonna daughter, who has delusions of being a sorceress.  On her way to the palace, Amelia runs into Lina and Gourry.  Lina is beating up hoods who wrecked their table.  Gourry is amazed to have found people stupider than he is.  As they are clearly still living deep in the heart of denial-land, I suspect this happens a lot.

Amelia recognizes someone with less dipolomacy than her when she sees one, ditches them, and heads for the castle.  BUT OH NO! ZEL IS WORKING FOR THE BAD GUYS!!  (Because he thinks they can make him human again.)  Zel tries very, very hard to convince everyone that he's evil and bad.  As always, this inspires the urge in me to pat him on the head.  Except not really, because his hair is razor sharp wire.  While Amelia is busy freaking out at having to fight another "defender of justice," the castle guards sensibly tie her up.  Zel is secretly relieved he doesn't have to fight her and have his inner softie show.  Then Lina shows up, tells Zel he was lied to, and he switches sides in half a second.  Everyone takes this as a given.

Meanwhile, the gang seems to have realized that it is wise to evacuate the time zone when Lina is about to cut loose, and they've all taken to carrying around megaphones.  I approve.  With nothing better to do, the four start travelling to gether again.  Or, more accurately, Zel just can't escape them.  Later, Lina learns he's looking for a valuable book called the Clare Bible that can supposedly fix him.  Lina vows to get it for him.  She claims it's for the money, but we know better.  Along the way they meet a priest named Xellos, who is also looking for the book.

Insert general Slayers antics.

Xellos is fun.  He's one of those characters who is always triple and quadruple thinking everything and everyone.  He even manages to outthink Lina, which isn't very easy.  I suspect he cackles a lot when no one is looking.  Amelia seems to have lost about 10 levels of shriekiness.  I approve.  Zel remains and emotastic angstmuffin and the world's worst villain next to Kougaiji.  I also approve of this.  Lina and Gourry remain the same.  I cannot complain.

Lina, Gourry and Amelia remain amazingly obsessed with food.  I am particularly fond of the scene where where Lina and Amelia declare war over where they're going to eat.  Naturally, Zel sides with Amelia and Gourry with Lina.  I doubt either really cared what they ate as long as they ate, they just knew who would be dragging who off in the end anyway.  I'm amazed they didn't just eat all the food at one then move on to the other.  Naturally, rival sorcerers decide to hire them while they're on the outs.

Amelia also seems to think that Zel's skin and hair are cool.  Zel is too busy being emo about his lost humanity to realize a keeper when she thinks his weird looks are cool.

It probably would have taken a complete revamp for no love.
