Vol 4 continues with Clare's (awesome) backstory, as Teresa continues in her travels with Clare, trying to find a home for Clare along the way, only to have Clare refuse her attempts to leave her in safety, rather like the adult Clare's equally failed attempts with Raki.  When she finally does find a home for Clare, she learns that bandits in the area have only avoided the town because of the yoma she killed, and once she makes it back to town, she kills the bandits once she learns they've hurt Clare.  This, of course, means she's broken the one unbreakable rule for Claymores, the one that results in all the other Claymores hunting you down and killing you:  never kill a human.

Teresa, the strongest living Claymore,  easily cuts down the first group sent after her and Clare, resulting in the four Claymores closest to her in strength being sent after her-Sophia and Noel, two Claymores with seemingly no reservations or restraint, who combat each other to see who's better, Ilena, who is fast, cold and efficient and actually reminds me of the adult Clare, only not quite as smart or instinctive, and Priscilla, a young woman with little experience but incredible skill, and incredible belief in what she thinks is right(she utters that oh-so-popular line about how she has to win, because she's the good guy and Teresa is the bad guys and she broke the law.)

It is a fairly normal story:  Emotionless, elite warrior meets and becomes protector of someone who awakens their human side, leaves organization, and is hunted by former comrades while still protecting charge,  And yes, the main difference is that it's a woman in the role, instead of the typical male, but here it really does changethe entire vibe of the storyline.  And, unlike the few other things that have tried this route, it's done(so far) without the typical "now I know what it's like to be a mother and am complete" "revelation."

Claymore is a series that keeps popping up in recommendations for me, but I can't get past the whole demon/monster angle. Otherwise I'd probably have started reading/watching this around the time the anime started.

They aren't overly grotesque, and most of them are offed fairly quickly, though the first volume is pretty rough, and more monster heavy than the others have been. It's been mostly about the warriors.

I may yet give the anime a try when it comes stateside. The other option is to see if I can find a library close to wherever I land in Richmond, and to hope they have it.

Hmm ... I just looked at some of the art online. Style-wise, it looks like the love child of Blade of the Immortal and Fushigi Yugi Genbou Kaiden!

Pretty much. It's a bit odd the first volume, but I got used to it pretty well.
