Sanada Yukimura  is one of the more popular Samurai Deeper Kyo characters.  For those who went "hey, I know that name!" yes, he's based on the historical personage.  That's actually the case with a number of SDK characters.  It is, however, very much an "alternate history" fantasy/action book, and so they usually bear little resemblance to actual history, unless you really look.

[personal profile] chomiji made an excellent post about Yukimura's personailty and history  here, so instead of repeating her, I'll just say that if you don't know Yukimura or his story, go read that(and if you do, go read it anyway)

For the short version: he's the son of a fallen samurai clan who seeks to restore his clan to power.  For reasons detailed in [personal profile] chomiji's post, Yukimura usually adapted an amiable, almost effette facade of a man who never takes anything seriously and lives for booze and ale-house women(and possibly boys)  The truth, however, is that Yukimura takes EVERYTHING seriously, and is almost obsessively loyal to his friends and his subordinates, inspiring more selfless loyalty than he wants from them, as they tend to go and do things he doesn't like, like place his life before theirs.  Possibly the most important of these is Sasuke, a very tough and prickly-if extremely emotionally damaged-boy who is on a par with most of the adults in his life when it comes to fighting who Yukimura took in some time back.  Though he'd never consider himself as such-and Yukimura would likely never refer to himself as such-Sasuke is essentially the closest thing Yukimura has-or is likely to have-to a son.

Anytime the subject of Yukimura comes up, this is the part of the series-from Volume 9-I immediately flash to.  Basics: The gang is looking for Kyo's body(and Yuya, who was taken by Akira- see here for how that part goes in Vol 10) in the Sea of Trees and are all off on their own little dogfights, and Yukimura  is fighting an archer named Basara(whose name gives me SO many issues)

(aside: as you can see, there are referrences-in both the anime and the manga-to the way history is supposed to be)

Remember the part where I said that his subordinates tend to put his safety before their own?

Yukimura REALLY doesn't like it when his people are hurt, especially Sasuke.

(me: dear Basara, you have injured my Sasuke-kun...DIEDIEDIE!!!)

See? Inspires WAY more loyalty than he likes sometimes.

*squishes*

*cheers*  That's what you get for hurting Sasuke(well, a taste of what you get...)

See? It's the counting arrows that gets to me.  And the fact that the only ones he's REALLY mad about are the ones that hit Sasuke, because without shooting Sasuke, Basara was just someone to be takwen out...as opposed to about to get slaughtered.

Translation: You hurt my kid and pissed me off in general...you will now suffer for that.  A lot.

And *pop* he goes back to the facade.

One must pity Sasuke, who has to be about the most serious kid ever.  Who's being raised by a group of loons.

Saizo and Kosuke would like to register a protest: "We Juuyuushi are not a pack of loons! And Yukimura-sama is a god. No arguing!"

That is all.

P.S. ... if people don't want to rake through my book reviews and stuff for the Yukimura article, it's here.

Oh no...they aren't loons, not at all. *wonders if anyone would dare challenge Yukimura's god-hood with those two*

And...BAH!!! Thought I'd linked directly to it.
