1)  What is this I hear on the radio about California apparently deciding that that "legalizing gay marriage" thing was a bad idea and trying to make a new law to counteract it?  No, California, you are only supposed to try to fix bad decisions.  Stop with this second guessing thing.

2)  I have not been posting much on the marriage cult fallout stuff going on here, because it's being pretty well publicized.  I assume most know that the supreme court did some "no-no" handslapping in regards to the children being taken from their parents, and said to give a lot of them back.  Apparently, this has started.  If a single underaged girl who is married, pregnant, or already has a child is given back to her parents, I lose all faith in my state.

(BTW, between these two things, overhearing random conversations around town has been very interesting the last few weeks.)

Whoa, what? I haven't heard anything about that!

Very condensed version: A few years back, a cult compound was built just outside a city near here. Everyone in the area knew that it would blow up eventually, it was just when. A few months back, there was a raid on the compound(I forget what they finally went in for...probably positive confirmation of 12-13 year old girls being married off to 40~ guys) where a lot of police were brought in from the surrounding area(including from here) and they took custody of all the kids, and most of them were relocated here and they've been putting them into foster care, and pretty much every adult there was charged with child abuse.

Anyway, the supreme court (to the disgust of the entire area...seeing pregnant 13-14 year olds being led into local buildings tends to inspire certain feelings and all...) said that they had no right to take all the kids, and they had to be returned to their parents. It gets extra murky because there have been several births since then, and several girls(they took boys, too, but no one was marrying them of to people twice their age) turned of legal age since then, and then there are the really young ones whose parents are the teenagers in question. It hasn't really(in the stuff I've caught) been made clear if all or just some kids are being returned. I'm hoping that no girls who were married/pregnant/have kids are being returned to the parents who allowed it in the first place, but I don't have much faith. (The local govt., of course, is quite displeased about this turn of events, and the people around here are very opinionated about things even before it actually has anything to do with them.)

I forget what they finally went in for...

Phone calls to shelter/abuse hotlines, claiming to be from a pregnant teenage girl married to an abusive older man; it's now looking like the call was a hoax... (http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/hoax-call-triggered-police-raid/2008/04/25/1208743246487.html)

Oh, god, that's despicable.

And what a sucky, sucky move fore the supreme court. I cannot imagine giving children back to parents who put them in that situation in the first place.

My understanding re: the FLDS compound--which is, I admit, very likely incomplete, and being closer, you probably have better access to info--is that the supreme court ruling said that the kids shouldn't have been taken on the basis that they were, but left open the possibility of keeping or retaking some of the kids (particularly the ones you're concerned about) on other grounds...?

(Or possibly the same grounds with better evidence than the first time around.)

It's the "retaking" part that bugs me. I sincerely hope none of them are surprised when people hate on them for "we'll give this pregnant 14 year old back to the parents who said it was ok to marry her off to some stranger, but it's ok, we may take her back again later."

I'm absolutely appalled that any of those children are being returned. Yet more proof of how far the law has diverged from justice in this country.

Well, the supreme court is instating the marriages in like 14 days or something. The governor said he would abide by the court's ruling. It's the "family" organizations (you know, the right wing family) that are trying to get a ballot initiative.
