So, as most have probably seen on their f-lists a few times, rightstuf.com is having a huge sale on Geneon single DVDs.  I absolutely do not recommend Ayakashi, Ergo Proxy, and Last Exile.  At all.  Honest.  *pure and innocent face*  Nor am I bitter that Gankutsuou DVDs are $10 each, instead of $5.

That said, does anyone have opinions on Haibane Renmei or Zone of the Enders/Z.O.E.(a weekly special, not in the sale)?  For that matter, repeat whatever you said a while back about Serial Experiments Lain, please.

On the live action front, what about the Onmyoji and Princess Raccoon movies?

Also, Clamp's Suki:  Good?  Bad?  Flee in terror? Decent?

*the f-list, I fully believe it knows all*

I've only seen half or so of Haibane Renmei. It's a very quiet, leisurely-paced anime, very understated. Sweet but melancholy. The tone is almost -- I don't know -- delicate.

I enjoyed what I saw of it (I stopped because I got distracted by FMA, which is a lot more vivid and grab-your-attention-by-the-throat), though it's compelling in a very gentle, people-not-plot kind of way. At least as of the first half.

I thought Suki was very mediocre. Nothing particularly memorable about it at all.

As for the TRSI sale, it's interesting to track what's selling out first. Samurai Champloo & Ergo Proxy are pretty much sold out, frex. I even checked the original El Hazard series and that's gone, which I find a little surprising because it's such an old series and I wasn't aware many people liked it, so I kind of assumed the inventory wouldn't empty out the way it did. Good thing I placed my order last night or I would have been a sad, sad girl.

Haibane Renmei is - according to a friend of mine - the pinnacle of anime. It has a bit of slice of life based on some young girls (with grey wings) a la Aria and a lot of thinking about the nature of life and death a la Kino no Tabi. It has a strong plot and strong characters, boys are not important at all.

I liked it when I watched it, but it didn't grab me as much as it did him.

I adore Haibane Renmei. I asked for it in the Yuletide exchange and was lucky enough to get two fics. I'm not sure if you would, though. It's more slice of life (in a fantasy setting) than action series.

Suki is sweet and a bit disturbing. There aren't any fantastical elements (I kept waiting for some). If you like Clamp, you may well like Suki, but it's not crack in the same way that other Clamp stuff is.

I second all positive opinions on Haibane Renmei.

I read the first volume of Suki, and stopped because it was completely freaking me out. CLAMP's early stuff has a lot of romances between characters with major age differences. Major as in, grade school teacher-student relationships. These are mostly secondary characters, but in Suki it's the protagonists. I guess things could turn around and go insane, but protagonists had a cameo in Legal Drug that made me suspect not...

(And just so you're prepared if you're planning on starting CCS - it has two grade-schooler + teacher relationships. Argggh! CLAMP!)

I remember Zone of the Enders being a mediocre video game; I did not even know there was an anime.

Lain: VERY CONFUSING. If you watch it and understand it, please explain for me what happened.

Onmyoji: I saw at least one of them (I don't remember which, though) at Anime Expo a few years ago. It was enjoyable.

Suki: have not read it.

Onmyoji and Onmyoji 2 are worth watching. :)

Haibane Renmei is pretty and has nice music and is sad and bittersweet and delicate, all the things they said above. Meh. I'll never own it. I don't have a desire to see it again.

I will, however, go buy Lain. Lain is awesome, but that's according to my tastes, which (I'm learning) differ from yours. The first 6 episodes are normal enough but then it goes completely whacked and I loved it. Take that as you will in terms of a rec ;)

Haibane Renmei: Love it. I think I have a tag with my review. It's very quiet and thoughtful and beautiful -- not an action series. Almost all the characters are female.

Onmyoji: Love it. Funny, insane, absolutely fantastic lead performance. Some interesting female characters, though largely motivated by their feelins for men.

The feedback I'm getting on Haibane Renmei is making me think of Kino's Journey.

I believe the general consensus last time around was that even those of us who really loved Lain thought it might not really be to your tastes.

Sounds about right. I think my interest in Lain has more to do with hearing about it and being curious about that than the show itself.
