 1.  Rain, why did you have to start before I got home?  You started as I was leaving the work parking lot!  And you were coming down so hard that I had to drive really slow because I couldn't see!  Could you not have waited 5 minutes?

2.  Possibly, I am being quasi-challenged to not buy books for a month.

3.  Also, if you see me on IMs near 1:30 CST tomorrow/today/Friday, tell me to go to work.  If I get in 10 hours tomorrow, THEN EVERYTHING I WORK ON THE WEEKEND WILL BE OVERTIME PAY!

4.  Have read the first book in the first of Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci Chronicles omnibuses.  Nice world, but wished to destroy Cat and Gwendolyn.  Only really liked Christopher, Millie, and Janet.  Have started second.  Much better.  Would like The Adventures of Christopher and Millie now, please.  Also, more Janet.

I wished to crush Gwendolyn. Like an insect.

And in the scene where she got a walloping, and then Cat got his ears boxed for not having stopped her, I wanted to cheer. (Normal feelings about corporal punishment notwithstanding.)

Gaaah. Yes, in a lot of ways, Cat was worse. And then all the talk about how he was so super duper extra powerful at the end set off all my alarm bels.

The thing about Gwendolyn is that she's hateful and petty and spiteful JUST to be hateful and petty and spiteful. There's no narrative reason to it, no solid background or goal("I was told i'd be queen, so i will be!") She was awful just to have an awful character, which is a narrative choice I always have problems with.

It is not so much a challenge as a statement of the improbability of there being a month where you don't buy books. :)

Tried your number 2 and failed. Bought around ten new books because of this member-only sale, hmmm last month I think. Still bought a couple the following month. Sometimes I am just hungry for something that I don't see in my shelf/cabinet or the feeling that it's blasphemy that I will leave a bookstore without a book after browsing for a long time.

Yeah. I think I could do it with a "unless rightstuf has this, this, or this sale" (there are a few sales they have rarely enough that I don't want to risk missing out) as long as I just don't GO to any bookstores or Amazon. But THE GUILT!

Hmm...it would be interesting to see if you could withstand buying books for a month.
