DECEIT!

So, people both online and offline have told me about "Regency Buffy."  They have also talked to me much about Colleen Gleason and Libba Bray.

One of these people works in the book department at Hastings.  When I saw the first 2 Bray books at 50% off (secondhand) at Hastings, I asked her if those were the Regency Buffy books.  She said yes.

THEY ARE NOT!

THEY ARE VICTORIAN!

AND THERE ARE NO VAMPIRES!

*actually prefers Victorian-early 20th C. as a setting to Regency, though she does like the Regency setting*

*investigates a bit[translation: peeks at Amazon and  [personal profile] oyceter's review]*

*decides it actually sounds a bit more her thing*

BUT STILL!

DECEIT!

I WAS MISLED!

I have one of the Libra Bray books and I couldn't even get through 2 chapters.

Was it the present tense? I despise present tense with every fiber of my being(esp. present tense in the first person...it's not so bad, otherwise) but the story sounds like it could get me past that.

Okay, I'm warning you right now... The first book had this weird thing where I struggled through the first third or so, and then suddenly I hit a point and could not read fast enough.

'I look. I turn. I say.'

That was actually fairly annoying for me when I was reading Jean Craighead George. The stories got me past it, though!

I own the first 2 Libba Bray books and I liked them. No vampires there, but witches.

Oh, I'd like to ask a question if you don't mind... what's the time difference between Victorian settings and Regency? I'm thinking Regency are like, Austen books?

Though not the exact years of the historical eras, "regency" is usually used for about 1805-1820, and "victorian" for about 1860-1890s.

I really really really adored the Libba Bray books. Seriously. The 1st person present is hard to get past for like, the first 3 chapters. And then she totally sucks you in. Do give it a chance. :)

But yeah. Libba Bray is not vampires. That person told you incorrectly. Colleen Gleason is the 'Regency Buffy' and no comment on those books. ;)

The Bray books sound more my thing, really. It's just whether or not I can get past first person present tense. It...I...no matter how good the rest is, that's just such a hard voice for me to read.

Truest facts: Victorian and Edwardian are my TWO FAVOURITE ERAS EVER. For English history, at least. The only competitor is Restoration.

Yup. All sorts of interesting things going on in those periods.

Edwardian times strike me as so dull. English Civil War, however, fascinates me.

Socially? Politically? Britain 1901-10=FASCINATING.

The Civil War period was fascinating in an entirely different way!

I find it very dull, but maybe it looks better from outside Britain. I think it was partly the dullness of that time politically that led to everyone being so enthusiastic about WWI.

Yea...but they are still good books! Though I absolutely HATED the ending!!

I prefer the plot (as an idea) to Regency Buffy, actually. No spoilers, please.

I've lost track of the number of people who have said that Jane Austen was writing in Victorian times or, even worse, that she wrote historical fiction.

I'm willing to dismiss it as "got confused because they're both popular historical fantasy YA series."

Barely.

Have you heard the one where Jane Austen writes movie scripts?

How can they be regency buffy if they a) are in the wrong time period and b) have no vampires?

This is deceit, indeed!

I KNOW!

Well, I'll just read supernatural victorian boarding school instead!

Libba Bray! Yay! Though, um, yeah, not so much with the Regency Buffying. Maybe some Victorian Tara Maclay?

YES! I WAS MISLEAD!

And as a lot who voted for it voted thinking it was a specific other book, I now feel mild guilt and concern...

These are not nearly as bad as Twilight, but I still didn't like Bray's stuff as much as I would have liked to.

i refuse to believe that anything is as bad as twilight. except eragon.

I was wondering why you were referring to them as Regency Buffy.

Yes, I was trying to remember what you'd called them, but I couldn't remember you saying anything about the plot. I think, though, that since almost every conversation we have turns to Buffy I ASSUMED you were a "Regency Buffy" person.

BUT ONLY BECAUSE I WAS MISLED!!!

Deceit indeed! I keep disliking Bray and reading on because I want to know what happens plotwise, though that wasn't enough to get me to finish the final book. And while first book of Regency!Buffy (The Rest Falls Away?) is fun, I got super bored by the second book, and I am fairly sure you are going to hate one of the love interests.

Yes, magicnoire has warned me of the love interests. Possibly, as I was deceived, I shall just wait and make sure she does not turn into a ranting maniac when the third book comes out, to make sure I will not.
