Russell Crowe, how can you be awesome beyond words in Gladiator, yet put me to sleep in every everything else I've seen you in?

Previews didn't interest me. It looked good, but not my thing.

This is one of the great mysteries of the universe.

The scene where he shot his guy who got caught and then the guy who caught him(which was a stupid scene in general, because it made it obvious that he could have easily taken him down without shooting his own guy) and in the bar where he was talking about how his guy died because he was stupid were both clearly meant to fascinate me and make him compelling, but it just made me wonder what else I'd brought out here to read.

They lost me when no one thought TO SHOOT THE HORSES ON THE STAGECOACH THEY WERE TRYING TO STOP. Just so they could have Crowe's character have to use a cunning ruse to stop it. And then Bale's character stands on a ridge with his two kids watching him kill people without any apparent worry.

Too stupid to live, the lot of them.

*sigh*

Yes, Bale's character was rather lacking, too.

I think his wife showed signs of a brain. She basically said he was stupid.

O_O You didn't like Master & Commander? *wibbles* Then again, I was kind of there for the tall ship porn. XD

I would have liked it a lot more if it had been shorter.

Do you like Patrick O'Brian's books at all? they're way better than the movie. And funny too, once you get used to the language.

Well, if you like historicals, wry humor, seafaring action/adventure, delightfully flawed characters and learning more than you ever thought there was to know about British naval politics, check them out.

Whoa, 3:10 to Yuma was one of my favorite films of last year! It's middle was a bit weak, but I thought it had the most exciting end game I've seen in some time. I guess you should stay clear of the Jesse James movie then. ;)

My favorite Russell Crowe movie so far is Cinderella Man (I haven't seen Gladiator yet).

I think it was a bit too "a western! A WESTERN! The nostalgia!" for me.

I tend to either really like westerns, or be really irritated or bored by them.

Shame; I thought Crowe was the best part of 3:10.

3:10 to Yuma was more of a Bale movie than a Crowe movie. His character...wasn't really that exciting. Just like Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts (http://www.gruntland.com/).

Actually, I loved him too in American Gangster, LA Confidential. But still Gladiator is his best movie. Not to mention that it's my fave film too! =)

I'd be hard pressed to choose my favorite movie, but it's high up there. I think my problem isthat, in the roles I've seen him in after Gladiator, he's just channeling Maximus, and while Maximus is pure awesomesauce, I don't want to watch him bein rechannelled...

hmmm...have you seen L.A. Confidential?

Well. In Gladiator, it was all about him, but everyone around him was also interesting. Also. Really prettily shot.

Gladiator is one of my favorite movies, but I can't help but think that Crowe keeps channelling Maximus in his other roles.

I love him in Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man and that awful movie with Meg Ryan, Proof of Life. (I can't believe I just admitted that.) But other than that he kind of bores me.

Aside from Gladiator, the only one of those that interested me was Cinderella Man.

You haven't seen A Beautiful Mind.

You haven't seen Cinderella Man.

So what other movies ("everything else") of his have you seen?

Or is your judgment based only on the two movies, Gladiator and 3:10 to Yuma? ;)

Master and Commander, the western with Sharon Stone, and something else whose title I've forgotten.

And he was good in Master & Commander, I think; however, I liked him in 3:10 to Yuma, too. But then your more critical than I am about such things. ;P

Master and Commander I would have liked a lot better if it had been longer. The problem I had with Crowe in it and what I watched in 3:10 to Yuma(which wasn't holding my attention in general) is that he seems to play the part as if he were still playing Maximus. He plays out the speeches and dramatic moments almost the exact same way.
