No individual episode comments as I was just repeating myself.
Fans of the show who have been twitching at and/or running from my posts all week can breathe a sigh of relief.
You know, contrary to how it seems sometimes, I really am very easy to please. I don't demand political correctness in my fiction. I want it, and in a perfect world, everything would be PC, but I know that's a pipe dream for a long time yet. All I ask is that something have enough good stuff to compensate for the issues. I can watch all 10 seasons of SG-1 or the first 2 seasons of Supernatural and read/watch all sorts of manga/anime and see that they have problems and sometimes go headdesky over them, but still be able to enjoy the final product, because the good outweighs the bad. If I demanded political correctness in all things, my entertainment pool would be extremely limited. All I ask is that the problems not be so prominent that a character leaps out and bashes me in the face with a metal folding chair with "gender and/or race issues" written on it in 4 inch letters. When they're that obvious, I get testy.
The thing is, a lot of the episodes are no worse than your average TV episode. Some (many) are truly horrible in that regard, but others deserve some facepalming, but not seething rage. The thing is that there's no break from it. It's just one episode after another with issues piled on top of issues, and it never does anything to redeem itself. I mean, SG-1 would have episodes where Sam mostly sat around being admiring of the guys (and it wasn't always sure what to do with her, I think because she combined the brainy woman, the nice girl next door, and the warrior woman into one character, but couldn't fit neatly into any of those character types), but then it would turn right around and have an episode all about her saving an entire planet. If the episode had a "rescue Sam" aspect, she'd be giving her captor/pursuer hell and spend the whole time doing everything she could to rescue herself. Teal'c may have spent a lot of time looking stoic and manly and being the team's enforcer, but he also had a plotline almost from the first episode that was important to the main plot, and they kept that plotline going, and relatively prominent, the entire series (even after it kinda should have been laid to rest.) Christopher Judge also had a bad habit of stealing any scene in which he opened his mouth. Sometimes, he didn't even have to do that. SGA doesn't do that. Teyla and Ronon are there to be pretty and sometimes beat things up and Elizabeth is there to pretend to be incharge but really just follow Sheppard's lead. Unless they need her to be wrong. And sometimes even then. But he won't be wrong. In other things, I can go "well, that was a big misstep, but I think they're trying." Here, I can't even think of doing that.
It's also annoying because, handled differently, this show would be awesome. I mean, an expedition trapped in an ancient city in another galaxy, led by a woman who got lost on her way to the set of her political drama and ended up in a scifi show? With alien vampires? What is not to love about this setup? But everything they can do wrong, they do. Even with Sheppard and McKay. After his first couple episodes, I really liked McKay in SG-1. It wasn't until about the middle of SGA s1 that I started hating him. Sheppard? Jack and Cameron are proof that I can adore his character type, and I liked him in the episode of SG-1 he was in. It's just the way the show writes them and it's conviction that they walk on water, fart unicorns, and are to be commended for causing almost every problem in the show that makes me hate them. And I thought SG-1 handled Pete badly.
It also doesn't help that they keep recycling plots and episodes that were done much better in SG-1. Osiris disapproves of that.
Anyway, with the possible exception of the Teal'c-with-dreads ep(unless there are others people think I would like) I am done. Let me know if it ever becomes the Elizabeth, Teyla, Ronon (Teyla/Ronon also acceptable) and Lorne show. Zelenka and Carson can stay to. They are cute and sweet. I'd say let me know if they ever revisit Ford's plotline and try to fix it, but I'm sure they've completely forgotten he ever existed.
And this LJ shall now be SGA free.
Unless I cave in to my masochistic urges. I seem to have a bad problem with that at times.
I'll try to warn you if I feel it's about to happen.
In the meantime, I shall be watching things about girls with guns and/or swords for a bit.

In ep 1 of S5 it opens with Ford as the voice of John's guilt, which from what I've heard is pretty cool (haven't watched it myself), though certainly not enough to actually say "watch the episode" for it. I am just glad to hear he hasn't been forgotten about.

Date: 2008-07-12 08:29 pm (UTC)b) Strangely, I see where the slash is coming from. McKay in SGA (not in SG-1) essentially codes as female in the stereotypical "wussy like a woman" way. Also if you watch and pay attention to the fact that the show views them as the only important characters and their interactions and relationship as the only worthy ones, it's the natural conclusion. I just despise both too much to care. If people are going to slash, though, I want to know why it's not McKay/Zelenka. I see that and I don't want to(because, while I like Zelenka, did I mention I hate McKay?)and that's even without the "McKay is all important" filters of the show. Mind you, I have no interest in reading it, it's just one of those rare occassions where I see the slash subtext without erasing all other possible interpretations.
I haven't seen/ordered/acquired CS yet. I hope to soon. (But then, I've been saying that for months...I've just fallen very behind on dramas.)

I understand falling behind on dramas but CS is definitely one you'll want to catch eventually.

Date: 2008-07-12 08:56 pm (UTC)As far as "McShep" goes...I can almost always call the popular slash in something by noting who the main male is, the most popular male, the one most think is hot, and what 2 are exact opposites but still interact. This is before I look into the fandom. A lot of the slash in fandom seems to be based more on popularity and main character prestige(that being paired with the hero makes you Speshul, so obviously, the hero would have sex with your favorite) than anything else. (Mind you, 6~ years in the anime/manga fandom has jaded me.) The only real exception is Avatar. Of course, that fandom is obsessed with the sex lives of characters aged 12-16, so...
