So, Amanda Quick. AKA, Jayne Ann Krentz. AKA Jayne Castle. I have an odd relationship with this author. You see, for about 10 years now, she’s basically been rewriting new versions of the same characters under her various synonyms. In addition, she goes through phases where she will try out varieties of the same basic plots. Her heroes are essentially all alpha males, but she’s the rare romance author who actually writes heroines capable of dealing with alpha males, instead of girls who put up with being bulldozed over because he “saves” her. In addition, her alpha males are far, far superior to most romance novel alpha males, and her dialogue tends to tend towards excellence. Very simply, I would rather read JAK rewriting the same book 20 times than 20 other authors writing a book for the first time. It’s not really an accident that I bounce off about 5-15 romance novels for every one that clicks.

The latest phase for the AQ pseudonym has been a heroine with a secret past who lives under a pseudonym. Said heroine has a not-quite-proper career, and is somehow addicted to the Victorian version of torrid romances. She will view herself as extremely practical, but is actually a hopeless romantic. The hero will be a man who she thinks is very very Dangerous and possibly has a shady side career, when he’s actually on the up-and-up. She will decide she wants to have an affair with him. He will decide they are getting married. Things will happen.

This time out, our leads are Louisa, a lady’s companion who fakes her own suicide a year ago after killing (in self defense) a nobleman who tried to rape her and Anthony, a man investigating the supposed suicide of his fiance a year earlier. And the normal Amanda Quick novels ensues.

If you like the author, the book is good and what you expect. If you’ve never read her…well, it’s not a bad intro book, but she does have better ones.
