Prompt me!

Those of you who have known me long enough may remember that around 2000-2001(maybe as late as 2002) I tried my hand at writing.  Not fanfic-I gave that up at around 17 or so-but original fic.  But then the perils of being an English major with philosophy and psychology as double minors (full minors, not a split minor) took over my life, and I was, at any point in time, working on 2-3 papers for school with no time to write anything for myself, and when I finally graduated two years ago, the thought of writing when I didn't have to gave me hives.  (For that matter, I had no time to read.  A Regency or category romance could take me a week and a half, if not longer.  I remember that it took me a month to read an Elizabeth Peters book at one point.  Probably why I started reading so much manga.  I could squeeze in time for manga and comics.  I also remember that it took me a week to watch the first disc of Wolf's Rain.)

But back to the point!

The last few weeks, I've been kind of wanting to write again, but having trouble thinking of anything where I thought I'd actually be happy with a result.

So, anyone want to give me prompts to see if anything can get me motivated?  If fanfic instead of original fic, I doubt I could write anything but canon based gen or crackfic.

Somebody could also try to get me to write that Saiyuki crackfic I keep not being able to start where Kougaiji and Sanzo learn that Gojyo taught Goku and Lirin strip poker.

I think that, being a kids show, we're automatically accepting of these things in Avatar.

telophase's steampunk post, though, has got me thinking that in a steampunk setting, there are all these sounds everywhere...

I don't know, I think if there's the right elements introduced, it makes it more plausible-- not the kids' show aspect. Toph's 'seeing' things through vibrations in her feet work because she's a very powerful Earthbender and is connected to the Earth in that way. Daredevil's a mutant, so he has the radar. The challenge, IMO, is to introduce something that makes her ability plausible.

*inner comic book geek rears head*

Actually, Daredevil was splashed by chemicals that blinded him and affected the rest of his senses. Tragically, the last thing he ever saw with normal sight was his father carrying out a mob hit. Not that this alters your point.

I think that, by the time Toph showed up, we were accumstomed to the idea that bending makes you capable of virtually everything.

I thought the chemicals caused a mutation, though that may be from my confusion between the DD and TMNT origin stories. (Oh, Frank Miller, is there no life trauma you can't make more traumatic?)

But see, there's a groundwork laid there. The trick is laying it properly.

Hmm...I think my thing is that I want the character to not have any sort of superhuman ability beyond what a normal human could have.

Actually there are other, less known blind action characters in comics...

That would be tougher. You could make a fairly effective poisoner, though.

I may or may not have used telophase's talk earlier about people who aren't noticed being able to familiarize themselves with layouts to attempt positing something plausible.

(I think the steampunk aspect gives room for something radarlike if the person has trained themselves, too.)

There's a most-likely-apocryphal story of how two American POWs managed to escape a German POW camp during WWII. They stole a measuring tape and a clipboard, then with one wielding the tape and the other making notes on the clipboard, managed to measure themselves out of camp. None of the German soldiers stopped them because everyone knows Germans are fanatical about order and records and everyone assumed that the prisoners had been given orders to do that by Somebody Else.

But OTOH, never underestimate the power of the clipboard to make it look like you belong somewhere. XD

Plus with Toph, they have realistic situations in which it doesn't work, and they point that out, which I appreciate. Their workaround has limitations.
